Closing Bell: Bushwick is 'New York Cool'

Travelers on British Airways can read all about Bushwick in the latest issue of the airlines' magazine, High Life. The neighborhood is recommended for those who want to experience the 1980s era of Manhattan and its underground vibe. The magazine claims that "Bushwick is just nine stops on the L train from Union Square, but it’s a 20-minute time warp to a golden age of New York cool." Bushwick BK predicts that photos from a tourist's visit to the 'hood would probably include "self-portraits in front of the Boar’s Head Rock Street distribution plant, rainbow-colored puddles, skinny people on double-decker bicycles and maybe a shot of that creepy Santa statue on Bogart Street."

Closing Bell: India Street Mural Project Fundraiser

We wrote about the India Street Mural Project back in April when they were asking for artist submissions. Then the North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (NbPac) announced the project's artists in May. Now the painting of the mural has begun (even despite the rain). Tonight at Gallery 1889 in Greenpoint, NbPac presents RE/PAINT RE/BUILD, a fundraiser to benefit the mural project. At the fundraiser, there will be an unveiling of each artist's wall proposal as well as a silent auction with works by the artists. To RSVP and buy tickets, click here.

Closing Bell: Quidditch in McCarren Park

The Brooklyn Kickball League has some stiff competition at McCarren Park. Reported by The Brooklyn Paper, this past Saturday, some Harry Potter-loving college students got together in the Park to play Quidditch, "a high-flying sport practiced by wizards and witches who ride magical flying broomsticks." Obviously, there was no magical flying; feet stayed on the ground while running with the broomsticks. Definitely not something you see everyday in Brooklyn.

Closing Bell: Daily News' City Map Guide
Another city guide but this one is different. In celebration of the NY Daily News' 90th birthday, they asked 90 celebrities (and the News' top writers) to name their favorite places in the city. Places and spots in Brooklyn got a mention from a few (and rightly so). Like actor Adrian Grenier loves Habana Outpost in Fort Greene and Sharon Carpenter, a BET anchor, loves Luz in Clinton Hill. Even Mayor Bloomberg's favorite spot, it turns out, is in Brooklyn—Nathan's in Coney Island.

Good question. All the photograph says is that it was taken last summer in Brooklyn Heights. Maybe foleymarq will sign on and let us know!

Really? I took this picture around that time. And I still saw kids going in and out of the park. Maybe I just missed the Park people ushering everyone out...

Hi Troll,
Unfortunately, there is not a set list online of the participating businesses. But I think a lot are advertising this in their windows (or you can ask!).
Also, on OTBKB it was mentioned that Aunt Suzie's is doing this. And from BP, Zuzu’s Petals is offering a discount.

As a Texan, I was happy for their queso.
As someone who lives down the block from it, I am grateful for a good Tex-Mex (ish) option in the Burg.
I have yet to try their brunch though.
(And their verde salsa is too hot me.)
