I would say the the old terminal was neglected, but not a mess. The waiting room was usable into the 80's (not destroyed in the 70's) until a section of ceiling fell, but was never repaired. There was room for tenants at street level, but there hadn't been any for years.

It was on a small scale, but was not beyond being salvaged.

There was a very nice Beaux-Arts station there. It was allowed to fall into disrepair.

Now there' a crappy mall that tries to invoke Ebbetts Field.

Here are two links to give an idea of an actual, historical building on this site that was lost:

This is the scene from yesterday in the courtroom of the New York State Court of Appeals in Albany. The building first opened in 1917.

Many will recall this timeless classic:

D-O-N-E D-E-A-L

So, basically, the MTA and the ESDC continue to work so that the developer gets as many breaks as possible, yet nobody, not even the developer can say what the arena looks like.

How can this be?

Gehry's totally gone from this project:

Frank Gehry Out of Rest of Yards Too
by Matthew Schuerman

NEW YORK, NY June 09, 2009 —Days after marquee architect Frank Gehry was dropped as the architect of a new Brooklyn Nets Basketball arena, WNYC has learned the architect won't be involved in other parts of the complex either. WNYC's Matthew Schuerman reports.

REPORTER: Just two years ago, developer Forest City Ratner was insisting Gehry would design each and every one of the 16 towers that surrounded the arena. Gehry had dubbed one of them Miss Brooklyn. But two sources close to the project say now the developer is not planning to use Gehry any more, citing costs, the architect's lack of interest and the complications of meshing different architectural styles in a small space. A spokesman for Forest City Ratner said Gehry is still "involved" in the project but did not answer specific questions. The developer says it plans to break ground on the arena this fall, and the first residential building six months later. For WNYC, I'm Matthew Schuerman.

Snob.

Perhaps Ratner will build in Prospect Heights some day, but I believe that if he doesn't get something built this year, the State can cancel the project. That would mean an end to the instant upzoning this State project would provide.

Other than Norman Oder, who can be expected to do in-depth, original reporting on this race? Perhaps you'll get some from the New York Times Fort Greene blog.

I had assumed (based on no inside information) that tolls would be handled using an Open Road Toll system, similar to the one featured in this article: http://njmonthly.com/articles/lifestyle/open-road-e-zpass.html.

Of course, there's no guarantee that something like would be used.

Ahhh -- a D-O-N-E D-E-A-L reference.

Maybe some of you kids can remember how this was a D-O-N-E D E-A-L back in 2005.

Good times, good times...

Could 2009 be the year when the phrase D-O-N-E-D-E-A-L is finally retired from Brownstoner?

I did not attend, but I believe this is the policy concerning the cost of tickets:

"Tickets are free to reserve in advance,pay-what-you-can at the door. No one turned away!!!" (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/48154)

So it's not clear how many audience members paid.

From my viewpoint, you are unfortunately correct: The issues around Atlantic Yards development continue to go mostly unreported outside the blogosphere.
