SlopeBuppie wrote a review about Taro Sushi on March 13, 2009 12:35 PM
I feared this day was coming. The secret is officially out on the best sushi in the Slope. No one else in BK comes close to the quality and artistry of Taro, and I sincerely believe that this place can hold its own against Manhattan's best. The fact that Taro is 20 yards from my front door is both a gift and a curse. But Brownstoner I implore you: take down this ROTD post IMMEDIATELY before the rest of the world finds out!
I was so ready to hate this building, but every time I go by I am absolutely amazed. All these downtown buildings need now are some ammenities and less neighborhood stank.

SlopeBuppie wrote a review about Canaille on January 9, 2009 12:33 PM
I cannot compliment Canaille enough, as it has become my favorite restaurant in all of Park Slope. I'll start with the owners, Philippe and Marie, who fill the restaurant with comfort and love. Their warm and friendly personalities are what make Canaille feel like home. The menu is superb, my personal favorites being the seven-hour braised short ribs and the cous-cous (often the Friday "special du jour"). If you haven't had their french onion soup, just trust that it will melt the coldest heart on a blistery winter evening. Go to Canaille just once and you are family.
The city needs to seriously consider traffic congestion before implementing tolls. The Flatbush/Atlantic intersection is already a mess, and this would only make things worse. Sure a few people would stop driving in as the monetary burden of tolls adds up, but there is no way it would offset the added congestion.

SlopeBuppie wrote a review about Melt on November 25, 2008 4:59 PM
I had a good Kobe Burger at the bar once, so I decided to come back for brunch with my girlfriend. Little did we know that the hostess/waitress would ruin this place for us forever. It was about 11am so we were the first ones there. The hostess sat us in the corner of the empty restaurant... the table where the plumbing pipe hinders your space. Strike 1. We asked to be moved to ANY of the other available tables and were then seated at the 2nd worst table in the completely empty restaurant. Strike 2. Whatever... we ordered our food and were good to go. Another couple walked into the restaurant, and the hostess (after trying to put them at the plumbing pipe table), sat them DIRECTLY next to us... in the otherwise empty restaurant. Both couples, after sharing a hearty WTF moment, just went about our business... intimately seated. I guess they were anticipating a morning rush, but no one else came into the restaurant until our check came (and THAT couple was seated next to the 2nd couple!!!). Sorry, but Melt has been ruined for me. Too bad... the food was great.
No one is shopping for clothes... period. I used to shop a ton more than I do now, as did most people. Now I'm saving the pennies I used to drop on $200 sneakers for business school, awaiting the day that my finance job ceases to exist. Mama didn't raise no fool!

I see Private Stock as more urban chic. D.B.A. and Vinny's Styles, another urban-oriented shop close by, are more geared towards the core hip-hop community, IMO.
Why no more traditional men's boutiques for the "typical park slope male" you ask? I hate to paint in broad strokes, but the "Park Slope guy" simply doesn't have the passion, patience, or style that his female counterpart has. He loves his vintage tees, $200 jeans, and casual sneakers but he doesn't shop with the fury and frequency of the female. Naturally there will be less offered for him.
Secondly, clothing retail in general is in the sh*tter.

Yeah I shop a LOT (ex men's buyer for a dept store based in NYC) and Private Stock can compare to a lot of the stores I visit in SoHo. There are some GREAT boutiques popping up in the area (d.b.a. on Flatbush and Dean for the sneaker aficionados out there). Hope this new featured store follows suit. Since it's a women's store I'll let my girlfriend be the judge.

Private Stock on Bergen b/w 5th and Flatbush is a very stylish men's boutique. They are the sister store to La Vedette, which is a popular women's boutique right around the corner.

My buddy rents from an owner in one of the Greenpoint buildings pictured above. Apparently one of them is almost completely empty!!

I always tell folks in the area that if they're looking for sushi or sashimi that they should head to Taro... for great rolls and other dishes, head to Geido.
The Brooklyn Paper delivers again and again!!!

Biz should get a plaque set there in his honor. Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to T.J. Swan singing in my head all day long (My house is the Albee Square Mall...)

I've played in the league for the past 3 years. Its harmless... just a bunch of folks having fun in the park on Sundays. Anybody (blogs, etc) who says anything else is just a HATER and needs to get away from their computer screen for a bit and reassess their interpretation of fun community sports and recreation. I've met some great friends, as well as my girlfriend of almost 2 yrs through McCarren kickball sundays.
Are there a few annoying hipsters there? Yes. But for the most part its just a group of fun-loving yuppies blowing off steam outside in the sun, playing a game where athletic prowess and fierce competition aren't the main focus.
As far as the trees, we've reconfigured the fields and will work around it. No biggie.
