when philly beats pittsburg in the superbowl (yes - when) i truly fear for the city. somehow they survived a world series, but philly is more of a football town.
dave, i'd board up the windows just in case.

to try to veer this back into "food" topic (albeit not brooklyn).. dave, you ever eat at tre scallini in philly?
one of the best meals i have ever had anywhere. was a long time ago though.

have to disagree with you there dave.
ny'ers are not great (you see the video of them smashing up a porsche in the meadowlands parking lot last weekend)?
boston may even be worse than ny. but philly is widely known for having the most insane fans. it's the only place i'd never wear an away jersey at a game. try wearing a rangers jersey at a flyers game - or a giants.. or even worse a DALLAS jersey at an eagles game. you may not make it out of there alive. i'm not joking.
i love philly.. love the town, have a bunch of friends there. but when it comes to sports they have a screw loose. they will all admit it too, at least the ones i know.

biff - arent you a giants fan? why were you wearing philly anything (was this a nyg/eag game?). was it to disguise the fact that you are a ny'er and spare them winging batteries at your head?
dirty hipster - philly is a GREAT sports town - but their fans are literally crazy.

frankies is not byob, no. they have inexpensive house wine at $12 a carafe, and a decent selection of italian wines as well.
venturing into this new bar is really a no brainer for frankies here. comfortably having a few drinks while waiting for a table really isn't a big deal, i kind of prefer it actually (and i say comfortably b/c having a few drinks in a crowded bar like say, joya, while waiting for a table is kinda annoying). i'm glad henry's end is doing the same, as mentioned above. that's another restaurant worth the wait.
Posted by: RobertMosesJr at January 14, 2009 3:05 PM in response to Brooklyn Food & Drink Round-Up
i went to both frankies and prime meats this past weekend. there was an hour wait for frankies but they had the prime meats bar open for waiting - so had a drink in there for the hour that ended up only being 15 min. you access it through the frankies garden in the back - then through the new prime meats kitchen (they escort you).
that's a good shot of the bar pictured here, and behind where the photographer is standing are a bunch of other tables as well. almost all of the tables were full, which just goes to show how popular frankies is. the menu had a bunch of absinthe mixed drinks that i was going to try if my wait didnt get cut short (i actually was disappointed that my table was up - i wanted to stay). they had a few beers on tap as well but i don't remember what they were. i'll definitely be checking this place out again when they open.

if/when all of that fails - go to the guy on court street next to the fish place in CH. there was a brownstoner posting on him a long time ago. if you're looking to rent he will absolutely find you a deal - and fast. i used him when i first moved to the neighborhood a long time ago, and many of the landlords (the older ones at least) will only go through him as well. when i moved out of my initial rental i tried to get a friend to take over my lease but my landlord still insisted on going through him anyway. i want to say his name is alan.

i think lefthook nailed it. i was there on one of the first nights they opened. the service wasn't great but it wasn't for a lack of trying, they were super nice. the food here is outstanding. i've been back many times since and never been disappointed with the food and the service seems to improve with each visit.
at least calling this "boerum hill north" is still actually within the boerum hill boundaries (in the northernmost section). that is hardly a crime.
carroll gardens west - is NOT carroll gardens. big difference.

makes sense for henrys end to be involved in this one. they need a place to park the people waiting for tables. before the last one shut down the owner (at least i think it's the owner) used to be in there every 20 min getting people who had their names on the list waiting for tables. worked out well.

cobblehiller - have you seen more homeless walking around cobble hill lately? i have. and recently we've been having our newspapers stolen out of our front vestibule and even the metal drain pipe was ripped off the side of our building (assuming sold for scrap metal). i've only lived here since 97, but i'm definitely noticing an uptick.

This place is almost always crowded, and it being off the main drag (court/smith/atlantic) that says something. For those of you who commented on why mamary shouldn't be able to open up that oyster bar on hoyt, this place is a perfect example of a nice establishment working in a residential area. Sometimes an annoyingly drunk person will be loudly chatting on his/her cell phone outside, but it's an acceptable trade off to not have this area completely deserted after 10pm (wife can feel a bit safer on late night dog walk with people around).
As far as the food/wine goes, all are definitely above average and decently priced - although as CH'er noted above the little plates do add up. They usually have a pizza or risotto special but the regular menu is good too. Panini, mac&cheese, lamb chops, all are great. I havent been there for brunch, but it does seem to be very stroller-crowd accomodating during those times.
not even a single comment? no standard biff "too close to bqe" update? everyone is too busy with the census thread i guess.

brooklyn heights and cobble hill have been 2 days a week for as long as i've lived here (12 yrs) - can't say i've seen any "obvious" commuters there - if anything i'd think that 2 days a week makes it harder for commuters to park (people move their cars less - so less available spots).
i for one have occasionally been that person with coffee mug waiting for a spot - only b/c i got home late the night before and parked somewhere that i had to move by 7am. i then walk right to the subway. i think its fairly common even for locals.

nothing to write home about - but not terrible either. but i'm a fan of anything with good outside seating.
youd be suprised how many "1 bedrooms" are on the UES that are about 350'. the bedroom can fit a twin bed and maybe a small dresser, and you can put your feet up on the stove while sitting on your couch. and that'll run you about 1500.

even if these places are technically in BH, it's not like as if they don't add to the conveniences of living in CH. most people probably go to them on the walk home from the subway.
now that is probably the only downer about CH, proximity to the subway. i personally don't mind the walk, but it's about 10 min to boro hall and the F train blows.

fjorder - 2 verandah place is just finishing a gut reno, was vacant for years. looks like condo or co-op as well, as the buzzer has three buttons on it. may come on the market fairly soon i'm guessing, so if you're serious stay on the lookout for it. they still need to finish the exterior though.. they've been working on it since before the summer.
i think brownstoner may have noted the sale a while back if i remember correctly.

they need a compass
Cobble Hill is smaller and more intimate, especially east of Court Street where the noise and fuss gives way to peaceful little streets, gardens with wrought-iron fences and pre-Civil War era townhouses," they write
pretty sure they mean west of court.

127 Congress St -
$2.2mil for the lower duplex. Whouah ! That would bring the whole house value to about $3.5mil (if you discount for the upper floor and no outdoor). Go Cobble Hill !
-
i can see the top of this place, which seems to have a pretty extensive roofdeck. big trees, fence, etc. so upper unit will have nice outdoor space with city view. so maybe even more? by the way, there's 2 more floors above this unit.

this seems like it will shatter the record for worst rated bstoner reviewed restaurant. and deservingly so.
so much potential in that spot - so disappointing - and yet still somehow crowded alot
i am the anti-hipster who has been living in this neighborhood for almost 15 yrs (i guess what cobblehiller describes above is me) and have been dying for a good sports bar to open around here forever (but i just don't have the minerals to open one myself - wish i did).
codys is an odd crowd, but i guess the best option - ceol has crap tvs - floyd is only good for soccer and it's way too big with the artsy crowd - wades... don't even get me started there. this town desperately needs a good sports bar.. the sports bar that DTB&G SHOULD be.
RobertMosesJr wrote a review about Bar Tabac on November 10, 2008 6:14 PM
they serve real late (big big plus), great outdoor seating (which makes it dog friendly - always a lot of dogs there) - reasonably priced - stoned but good looking young staff - cheap cold wine - food is overall, good enough to go on a fairly regular basis. what else do you want?
only thing that annoys me, and it's never happened at any other sidewalk restaurant on smith (to me at least), is the last few times i've been i've been harassed some homeless people for change while eating. not sure why that corner is any different than others, but it is.
RobertMosesJr wrote a review about Zaytoons on November 10, 2008 5:47 PM
food is great, prices are cheap, service is spotty at best, and it's byob which is nice with smith&vine right across the street.
biff is the service rating police - so i think "spotty" justifies a 2 and not a 1, right?
RobertMosesJr wrote a review about Fragole on November 10, 2008 5:23 PM
after originally reading these postings back in sept, i tried it out and have been back 4x. hadnt been there since this was max. this place is great, and has replaced cafe carciofo as my go to, laid back italian (that is cafe carciofo - or however you spell it - from 5-10 yrs ago when it was great, not recent years where it was terrible and rightfully went out of biz). and i love the 27 bucks for all wines concept. makes you not feel cheap by ordering the lesser priced wines on the list.
fragole owes you brownstoner.. you got me in and now i'm hooked. (was a bit too far of a walk for me to just randomly try).
dammit - 2 posts on OBBP the week i'm away.
biff - my comments stand. it's a 5 second walk to willow under the bqe from here. how really is that any different in terms of noise, pollution, and distance to boro hall (7 min vs 7 min 05 sec)
not talking about price or anything like that.. if it was cheaper id move there in a second b/c it's a sweet building with sweet views. but it's not, it is too exp.

it seems that most BH buildings have much higher maintenance than other areas i've looked in. and not b/c of things like doormen or anything like that (at least not all). is it just that these buildings are in such bad (or i should say not great) financial shape or am i missing something? it seems more on the level of an upper east side apt.

i have to agree with nickelnuts (great great name).
if he taxes businesses hard enough, they WILL look elsewhere to set up shop. same thing happened on a citywide scale in nyc in the 70s. all the businesses left and look what happened. i believe mccain used ireland as an example in one of the debates. businesses are only taxed 11% there, compared to 30+ here. keep raising it and they will go.
that being said.. i still cant vote for mccain, and i'm a republican. the dude just scares me. but obamas economic plan also scares me. this is just a lose/lose situation. obama being the lesser of the losers.

"i didnt necessarily say the people living in these are necessarily bland.. "
you did - but i'll accept this revision.
maybe i just took offense to the comment b/c i'd love to live in this building and was considering looking at it (although it's doubtful i can afford it) and realized that i must be one of the bland lives you were referring to (which is probably true by the way). so i apologize for my anti hipsters who hate me sentiment.
but - i think taking industrial / office buildings like this and adapting for residential use is a great idea, they make for excellent spaces to live in. 110 livingston is probably a close (albeit larger) example.
"big clubs (and i do not go to clubs btw so dont even go there) " - cmon rob, i know you really wanted this to be brooklyns version of the palladium, admit it.

That's exactly what you should do, not crass at all. Also look on Craiglist, many of the higher end neighborhoods (like the Heights) have buildings in which a broker works for the landlord instead of the tenant.
