good places to leave books/items
what are some good areas to leave books and random stuff for people to take? i live in apt building and i guess i can just leave it out in a box like some people do but just wondering if stores get mad if you leave it out in front of them.
thanks!

the dyker heights christmas lights
alol yesterday my roommate was like i rented a zip car to go see the lights in dyker heights and it totally reminded me of people talking about that her a while back. wasnt there some kind of brownstoner field trip to see the lights or did that already happen?
anyway we wound up not being able to get the zip car cuz he couldnt find his activation card whatever that means. :(
so how are the lights there and what should i expect?
i thought there would be many more lights in park slope than there is. it's pretty slim pickins. (and the people across from me have a tree up.. you can see into their living room from my apartment and they have this HUGE tree with, kid you not, a light set of about 25!) i dont know if they are trying to save energy or what but that is not enough lights. the rule is 100 lights per foot of tree!

has anyone ever had any luck with housing lotteries?
in AM new york today i FINALLY found an advertisement for affordable housing where my income actually fits the criteria for both a one bedroom (1035) or a studio (900). unfortunately it's in mott haven in the bronx :( but i guess if i could find a new new construction apartment that's rent stabalized i would be very happy.. not having to worry about finding a new place all the time. plus i really really want my own apartment (im almost 32!).
anyway, it's just like 7 slots for studios and like 8 for one bedrooms. they do give 50 percent to people who live in the immediate area and 5 percent to people with disabilities, and 5 for city workers, etc, so in reality there are probably just a few apartments actually available..
just wondering if it's worth it? also if anyone knows of any in brooklyn? the ones i always find for brooklyn i either make too much or i make way too little.
the ones for manhattan are always ridiculous where it's like you cant even make more than 25K a year.. but that's fine, i guess it keeps people who do make that in manhattan so im okay with that..
thoughts?

where can i buy a xmas tree in park slope? and one other question
preferable something on 5th avenue on the name streets or early numbered streets (it's cooooold out and i dont to have to walk too far). im looking for a very very little tree tho. not microscopic, but one i wont have to buy a stand for?
on another note, i took a nasty fall on friday evening on union street between 4th and 5th avenue. there's an entire part of the concrete that jets up. i took a nastys pill and really hurt both knees (i wasnt even drunk btw, this was right after work). ouch. anyway, is 311 the place to call to get this fixed or is it the property owner? oh and when i fell this helpful man who lives on the block came up to me and told me that a few months ago an older lady broke her ankle in the same spot.
im not looking to sue anyone, i didnt have to go to the doctor or anything, but i dont want the same thing to happen to someone else.
thanks,

Mr. B... can we get an OT *off topic* forum here?
a bunch of us like to talk back and forth during the day and i feel like some of us are totally polluting the forums and regular blog posts.
having an off topic forum wouldnt detract posters from the other parts of the blog, but it would definitly give some of us who actually do like to poke fun at each other a nice little section of this great blog.
it's up to you, id think it would be cool. see what other think.
i just want to make fun of bayridgegirl about her former roller disco days but i cant just come out and do that in a blog about something important. it would just be for fun. if it gets out of control, of course, nix it. but most of the best blogs and websites have an off topic section where the people who wind up friending each other wind up talking about things where they dont have to mess up the other parts of the board.

suggestions for my doggy thanksgiving?
so it looks like this year for thanksgiving it's going to just be me and my dog and another dog. one's a pitbull 7 years old and the other is a beagle 15 years old. so their plates will definitely need to be different.
i was thinking about making stuffing and mashed potatos for myself and for them some kind of turkey concoction. would plain old turkey slices be okay to give to dogs? im sure my dog would be fine but i guess ill have to ask my roommate if it's okay for his dog. im watching his dog cuz he's going away for thanksgiving with his boyfriend and i dont want her sharting all over the house cuz i fed her the wrong thing.
im reluctant to hit add post cuz this is totally coming across as absoooootely pathetic but what are you gonna do? i think this actually IS the first thanksgiving in 31 years ive ever spent alone! tho im glad the dogs will be around.

making friends with people in luxury condos
im a pretty social person and always wind up meeting new fun interesting people throughout my perambulations around the city... but i have YET to meet anyone who lives in a luxury condo (not talking about a luxury renovated brownstone, or regular walk up building..) im talking like high in the sky luxury living with tons of amenities and big swimming pools and stuff.
honestly, id like to know, where these people hang out and what kind of stuff they might be into.
i know it's a strange question, but im genuinely inquiring about this. manhattan or brooklyn btw.

how to deal with noisy tweens!?
i am never ever ever ever one to complain about noise in the city. ever. except for this weekend. my bedroom window as well as living room window is on the first floor (ground floor) over looking what is supposedly a locked in alleyway..
well now there's a large group of kids who hang out in that alleyway and they are SUPER loud. i mean i dont really care.. it's just that ive lived there for months and never saw a single person in the alleyway.
fine whatever. they are usually only hanging out in the alleyway for about an hour or so each time they are there. but they've taken to taunting my dog, barking at it and throwing sticks at the window, etc.
part of it is funny in a sense. these kids are all like between 11 and like probably no older than 13. i was listening to their conversations and i kept laughing my ass off (if their parents only knew what these kids said ahhhah). anyway, when they taunt my dog i just open the shades and stare and they just stare back at me with a what are YOU gonna do look?! ha. okay so that's my question. what should i do!? throw water on them!? scream at them!? i dont wanna be one of those cranky people who yell at noisy kids.

It really is a good advantage if you have money invested in a 401k account, enough to buy you a house for preferably cash. For instance, assume you have $150k cash in your 401k, experts suggest rolling it over to a Self directed IRA from which you can use the funds (100% of the funds) to buy a house. However, the percentage of money you should take out from your self directed IRA depends on the amount of savings you have.
Once you have a self-directed IRA set up, consider purchasing actual physical real estate by withdrawing funds from your IRA to make a down payment on the home, and get a mortgage, or if you have enough funds, purchase the entire home by paying 100% cash.
Source: http://www.research401krollover.com/
You are not allowed to take a mortgage from your IRA, like how you would take out a loan from your 401(k) and pay it back in a certain period of time. When purchasing property from your IRA, remember this key point that all gains you make from this property such as rental income, capital gains, etc must be contributed back in to your IRA.

Hi, I do not live there (I am in New Mexico) but did come across this post because I have mysterious bread thing going on.
I moved into a small community recently.
On to the point, 2 times there has been bread left at my gate. The only times I have actually gotten the bread was when I have been away for the night, which has been 2 times. Not just white bread, but Pueblo Indian white bread. They are pretty large loves, baked in outdoor ovens. They have not been wrapped, but are left laying on the soil, in front of the gate.
I was hoping to shed some light on this, but the most information was from this post. I doubt it was a squirrel. I really did get a kick out of all your responces.
