Gov-Ray six section grill

Thanks to the help of this site I ordered the grill for my bathroom radiator from Park Slope Plumbing Supply. The problem is that I can't figure out where I am supposed to put the clips to hold it in place.

Heating Temperature Control

I asked this question the other day and based on the responses realized that I didn't explain the situation well:

"I live in a 16 unit, 4 story building with steam heat. The temperature is controlled by a thermostat in one of the apartments. This situation is not working out and we are looking for a solution to maintain a steady, consistent temperature throughout the building. Has anyone found a system that works for them? So far the suggestions have been an outdoor sensor, a sensor in a common area, or multiple sensors throughout the building."

The problem we have in the building isn't with the temperature control in people's apartments; it is that we have the thermostat in an indidvidual's apartment and therefore the building is subject to that individual's personal temperature preferences. We would like to move the thermostat out of the individual's apartment and need a solution for how to regulate the heat in the building.

Thanks again!

Thanks for all of the replies. I ordered it from Park Slope Plumbing Supply. Hopefully there are no issues with the new grill/old radiator matching.

Gosha -

Following up on an earlier thread: Why did you go with the MPC Platinum and not the EPU? Do you have any additional sensors in the buildings?

Also, why don't you just let Ari figure all of this stuff out for you?

MP and Bruce:

I am trying to clarify what the valve on the return line actually does. Does it just tell the timer when all of the radiators are full of steam and shut down the boiler?

Posted by: Pipecock at December 10, 2008 8:36 AM in response to Medium size coop heating system advice

MP:
The system sensor on the return line is to tell the boiler when all of the radiators are filled with steam, and this is called "heat established?"

Gosha:
Where are you located?

Master P - Yes that is very helpful. I am hesitant to put a locked thermostat in a common area for that reason.

I have spoken with a heating contractor and he was pushing the full sensor package with all the gadgets. I like the idea of using something more than a heat timer, but do I need 4 remote apartment sensors? Will it result in fuel savings? Is a return line sensor and outdoor sensor adequate?

I have recommended Glenn Sohm a few times on the Forums:

I have used Sohm Flooring twice with great results. Glenn is a one man operation and he is a bit of a perfectionist so it always took a day or two longer than expected but I have always been happy.

I have white oak floors as well and went with their natural color(s). The nice thing about the water-based products is that they don't get darker with age like oil does. My walls are all painted grey and I think that if I hadn't gone with the natural look on the floors the grey would have been too bland.

I did the same thing. I did half of my floors and then a few weeks later when I finished the work in the other half I did the rest of the floors. I used Sohm Flooring which is a one man operation and he uses only water based products. I would come home at night and the smell was never overwhelming so it is definitely possible to stay in the apartment. Call Glenn - (718)273-2217

I have used Sohm Flooring twice and recommended him here before. I had trouble getting any of the small contractors in Brooklyn to come and give me an estimate and found Sohm on Staten Island. Glenn does great work and uses all waterborne products. Both projects went a day or two over in time.

It's not a valve, it's a sensor and when its setting is reached, it tells the Heat Timer to start counting down the minutes until the off portion of the cycle.

Posted by: Master Plvmber at December 10, 2008 12:35 PM in response to Medium size coop heating system advice

Yes MP is exactly right. The sensor is measuring the temperature on the return pipe. When an adjustable temperature is reached, HeatTimer considers all radiators in the building to be hot AKA "Heat established". From that point HeatTimer starts counting down the minutes to boiler shutdown based on the letter designated heat-balance setting (also configurable).

I'm in Windsor Terrace (Near Bartel Pritchard Square that's a circle :) )

Posted by: Gosha at December 13, 2008 6:35 PM in response to Medium size coop heating system advice

The reason we went with the MPC Platinum unit is because we eventually want to be able to monitor the system's operation over time. Meaning once the return water temperature sensor is installed properly, we will hopefully also add ambient temperature overrides as recommended by MP.
That will effectively create a way for us to see what the temperatures throughout the buildings do during and after each boiler burn. That will point out if and how we could optimize the operation of the existing boiler with the current one pipe steam system. Perhaps see how much heat we loose by not having insulated pipes and how long does it take for the radiators to cool after a burn.

We have rebalanced the TRVs during the last season. That helped quite a bit. However the current configuration still does not respond to weather changes correctly without human intervention. Meaning we are constantly over/under-heated every time the weather changes significantly. Someone needs to adjust that every time.

While I realize that the current system is very primitive and that we can not do much with what we have I believe we can prevent the boiler from running when the buildings have already been heated sufficiently. That will conserve some oil, save us money (I doubt oil prices will stay where they are right now, after what we have seen over the summer) , and hopefully prevent any more crud from being released into the air for no reason.

With regards to Ari, he's pretty useless as far as managing managing projects is concerned! For ex. it took him 3 months to make me a nametag. We've been fighting with him to manage projects for us for years, many were not even acknowledged with a phone call. The ones that were, quickly turned into disasters. The only reason we're still with him is the fact that he's honest, which I can not say about other management companies we've been with, over the years.

Gosha,

At 48 units and considering what I have been reading, I think it may be worth having a discussion about your heating situation. You are probably running a boiler between 150 and 200 HP. Perhaps more. This is my field. Let's talk.

sfontas@moltenmechanical.com.

Best regards.
