Alarm Company
Bloggers:
We are looking for a reputable/dependable alarm company. Besides ADT, can anyone recommend a trustworthy / dependable company? We read some blogs on this site and wanted to know what people thought of Supreme Security.
Besides them, we would really appreciate some names. Thanks!

Blinds/Curtains
Can someone recommend a good blinds/curtain shop that would come to your home to measure and give estimates?
Are Budget Blinds reliable?
Thanks

Curtains
Would you recommend hiring an interior designer to put up curtains throughout a brownstone?

Try John Sullivan from North Willowdale Corp. He just did similar work for me and his team did a fine job. He can be reached at (646) 372-4597.

Sam, at the risk of sounding like the broker (who I actually know from a prior transaction), take a look in person and judge.

Actually went to the open house yesterday. The attention to detail is astonishing - everything is beautifully done and the floorplan works well for a one family with kids (there is a dumb waiter in case you were wondering how to get the dirty laundry to the garden level). I doubt a lower priced property could be easily (or cheaply) brought to this level of perfection. I envy the prospective buyer.

Would consider blow-in insulation instead. I have fiberglass insulation, yet it is difficult to get the rolls tight (the smooth surface side acting as vapor barrier should be towards the upper floor ceiling). As a result, there are a lot of gaps and the insulation effect is not that good.

I actually saw the house when it was first listed in 2007. Nice house, but really a 3-story (basement is probably 6 feet high only) with a width of around 18 feet. Contract was signed in a week or so at the time.

Get a proper termite inspection from a guy you trust. They don't cost more than a few hundred dollars (somehow I recall $150 for mine).

I can highly recommend Master Plvmber. His firm did an oil to gas conversion to me last year. Very neat job and the measurement of the existing radiators resulted in a smaller boiler than was recommended by another plumber and thus lower gas bills.

Nicely done. What you mind sharing were you got the light fixtures from?

Thanks for your comments zeebee_in_bklyn and Espresso.
zeebee_in_bklyn - did you have any issues with the contract terms and conditions with Supreme? ie how long was the contract for etc etc.

Even if you replaced a quarter of the beam why wouldn't the rest of it continue to sag.
A scissor jack, a 4x4, 2 loli columns. If you want to get fancy, knock some holes in the floor of the basement for some footings. Easily less than $1000. I don't see the DOB allowing you to "replace" part of what would be considered substandard construction by today's standards. You would be allowed to repair under the "gradfathering" law but not replace.

Try John Sullivan from North Willowdale Corp. He just replaced all termite-damaged beams of an extension and his team did a fine job. He can be reached at (646) 372-4597.
