Front Door Wood Finishes

Just looking for some advise on how to finish my recently stripped and stained front doors. Is there a particular type of poly that's best? Any advice would be appreciated.

I wholeheatedly second the ratzapper idea. In my experience, exterminators don't do too much and they are a waste money. You can go and buy the same posion yourself for much cheaper. I've used the ratzapper and it really works (without the mess of the snap traps).

The plan was to tear all those buildings down and build a condo building with retail, not to renovate the existing structures - see my post above. Additionally, all of the storefronts there are vacant - they were pushed out in anticipation of the project (which may have been delayed by the economy). As I stated above, I have seen renderings of the proposed building.

As I recall, there was a plan to build a condominium building on that site - with retail on the bottom. There was also a plan to build another condo building across the street where the outdoor market used to be (which I thinkw as being developed in coordination with Restoration Plaza). I had seen renderings for both projects.

See link for article on Brownstoner about the Goldman projects. http://brownstoner.apperceptive.com/archives/bedford_stuyvesant/

Without a doubt, more food and drink options. Peaches and Saraghina are great, but we still need more casual restaurants, bars, etc. Hopefully, Therapy Wine Bar will be nice - but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet. A gourmet market/supermarket would be great - preferably nothing too high end. Speaking of which, is Butternut ever going to open? It doesn't look like they're even doing any work.

This does frustrate me. While the place looks great, in my opinion, Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights need a facility like this more than Park Slope - yet the 2 armories in those communities are not open and renovated. Makes me wonder how the City decided to renovate this armory as opposed to other ones.

I had a friend of mine who's an architect put it together - but you can easily make one with a ruler and a pad. It doesn't have to be exact in terms of dimensions and scale, just enough to give a sense of the layout. It's not a requirement at all, but I will just say that even those who didn't rent the apartment commented on how much they liked it. I see you have pictures on flickr, I would post more directly on the craigslist ad - people may be too lazy to cik through to the link.

I will also say that my ad had more pictures than yours and a floorplan. Everyone loved the floorplan. Better to be under the market and have your pick of tenants. Really.

The photos look great. I rented a floorthrough in my house using craigslist. I had to show it a lot - but it only took a couple of weeks to rent. I think 1450 is a little much - especially over by Ralph and during the winter. There are just fewer people looking in the winter. The floorthroughs right near lewis and stuyvesant close to the utica subway can command 1450, but I would try 1350 or so. I really think craigslist is the way to go. If you lower your price and rent it - you will actually be saving money rather than waiting and renting it at a lower price.

Now, I don't really care, but isn't this technically Bed-Stuy. It is east of Classon. ALso, aren't the lofts on Lexington in Bed-Stuy too. I realize that real estate brokers like to fudge the boundaries, but Brownstoner has traditionally been a stickler for these things.

I don't think do. There was a event last month where they served free pizza and drinks. It was great. At the time, the said it would take a couple of months to get all the permits they need to open. It also sounded like they would be opening up the pizza area first - before the store/cafeteria, which will probably open at a slightly later date. Overall, it seems like it will be a great and much-needed addition to the neighborhood. I think Peaches has shown that a business that is well run will attract significant business.

I would be interested in both the tub and the knobs. Please e-mail me at maconstreet@gmail.com.

I think this is great. It's not easy starting a business and I commend Dave and his efforts. This, and the other developments on Lewis Avenue, could be transformative for the neighborhood. Any updates on the flower shop and the wine bar and their opening dates? I walked by the place on Halsey that's supposed to be a pizza place and I saw them making pizzas inside - practice I guess. I spoke with a guy painting chairs out front and he said their goal is to open next month (thouh he thought it might take a little longer than that). Yet another place on Lewis avenue to look forward to.

More organic produce, more affordable restaurants, less hipsters and less white people. Lets not be mistaken, its not about gentrification, it's about (white)ification. More white people come in, and gently push out the black folks and the families. It's a tight knit family community with a beautiful culture and history, it's disappearing...sadly...

I am deathly afraid of mice/rats/whatever.. I would def say if an exterminator would put your mind at ease then you should tell your ll that you would like one. you never know. beyond what you are doing already there isn't much else until the contruction stops.

tybur6,

I just read your post to my cat, Max. He says you deserve mice :-)

Posted by: Bob Marvin at October 30, 2009 2:19 PM in response to Mice in Bed-Stuy

Likewise have had success with the ratzapper and snap traps. Plugging holes with steel wool CAN work, but you have to be totally thorough (brownstones are just porous) and keep in mind the hidden places mice can come up (e.g., thorugh the gaps around pipes and gas lines to your stove, etc.). I have never had an exterminator do any good against mice nor heard of anyone having success with an exterminator.

I had a similar problem

bags of dirty cat litter near recently plugged up holes works very well.

Mmmm, bags of dirty cat litter.

Posted by: mopar at October 30, 2009 3:46 PM in response to Mice in Bed-Stuy

I just spoke to Max and he's willing to share his used cat litter if anyone wants it. He's a very generous cat.

What kind of litter is it, Bob? As I posted yesterday, my dog is very partial to World's Best.

Bob, I don't mind cats named Max if they have a "Max" personality... though, I probably still wouldn't want to be his roommate.
