How to attract bats

Does anyone keep, have, house or try to make things bat friendly for their outdoor spaces? Our garden was rendered unusable last year in the summer because of mosquitos - the mosquitos in Carroll Gardnes are striped and actually come out in the day - I heard that some people put bat houses up to try to control this - is this crazy? If its as simple as putting a bat house up I need to know - if its like keeping a goat in yourback yard then that won't do-much obliged.

Have you seen any acorns?

Has any one else noticed that there are no acorns? We live in Carroll Gardens and I remember last fall you would get pelted with an acorn when you walked near certian trees and you would hear them patter as they hit parked cars all day. And I just came a across an AP article sounding the alarm. Has anyone seen any acorns in Brooklyn? I haven't. And we now have a squirrel issue where they are burrowing in a hole in a deck and eating through drywall. Poor things are starved.

Hey I dont care if its the best school in the country I dont want to live next to it- I live around the corner from it - noise is noise and trash is trash.

Sorry I had a peice of fruit stuck in a tooth - all better now but I still hate lard bread - the thought if it makes me bloat.

AND I HAVE HAD IT UP TO HERE WITH LARD BREAD - try the cheese, chocolate or veggie versions for crying out loud.

Okay so Naidre's they do sell hot food and their food so so much better than most. Mazzola's is amazing and Koto is CREEPY! Come on people who eat there?! But jesus people unless you are handicapped there is no reason to point point out what is right there - you are two blocks from court and three from Smith. Rapelye is right on the school -its not quiet during the day AND you spend most of your time digging down your dogs throat to pick up what a kid dropped on the ground. The location does have its draw but the killer is the proximity to the BQE - unless you live here you do not know how much dirt comes in through the windows. Now for the matter at hand. That house is a dump. Are those laminate floors? CHIRST HOW COMMON! You would have to start all over with a match and gasoline. And look it even has cement in the backyard - that's a card carrying feature for a CG home. CHRIST!

I loved the show! I love Marhta and I love Brownstoner but boy it looks like you put a lot of effort into your hair!

I dont care if its a news copter or a copter full of Japanese-Spaniards - its abuse - this is not south central EL LAY - its a car crash for christ sakes - just a sad event made worse with overhead brown noise! Manhattan is so over - who even lives there anymore -ugh HOW COMMON!

Posted by: Ljubitca at October 26, 2009 12:35 PM in response to Copter Rage in Brooklyn Heights

Wait we live in Carroll Gardens so this is not about Brooklyn Heights - I can hear those f'ing helicopters all the time and the only thing I hate more than tourists on those double decker buses with the screeching brakes that tear at my intestines, is the noise that comes from those copters - this isnt just in BH its in CG and in Cobble hill and any of us who live nearer to the coast have to just put up with whatever money making scheme some schmuck has come up with to destroy humanity. AND I DONT HAVE A CASE OF THE MONDAYS CHRIST!!!!

I love, love love love - their nachos and their veggie tacos - as for how its supposed to taste if you are elsewhere doesnt matter to me. This place rocks compared to that nasty taquieria on the corner accross the street.

I affectionally call the Bird cage - a gerbil wheel.

So after the renovations - and just to be clear both endwill be open - correct? This entrance is the closest to us and it will be a bummer.

I am horrified to think that there will be only one exit this has night club sqaush stampede written all over it.

What also horrifies me is the people who live next door to this mess that smells of urine with their water fountain in the front yard - it must be horrible for them.

The post office in redhook should really have been put down. I don't care if someone sends me a gold brick registered - I will never go back to that office again. I actually had hope.

For crying out loud - tie a beagle to the post and she will make short work of those sissy bags. GO and tell the starbucks mananagment that you are calling the po po if it happens again - of course dont call the po po because they hate cyclists - I call them cyclists because that is what they are, as bikers ride motorcycles which dont normally need to be tied down. And as long as cars/buses can kill cyclists I am all for me me me. If you are parking your stroller where bikes go you have real problems. At least remove the baby.

One time our puppy who is a hundred pouns and barely 6 months old - got out of his collar and made a mad dash into Mazzolas Our walker was mortifed of course but found him safely inside on line. He has probaly wanted something from there for so long since the scent perfumes Henry street everyday.

They have many other breads for those who arent fond of meat chunks in their bread, like a spinach and cheese, or the plain cheese filled not to mention the choclate baguette. The best item of all I wont even mention as I am fraid there will be a run for it.

"The once industrial dockside neighborhood that inspired "On the Waterfront?" Wasn't that Hoboken?!

The kitchen is awful! Ugh how common! Look at those awful cabinets that have nothing to do with the interior. They couldn't add a window above that sink rather than the sky?!- and why no pictures of the terraces? Are the concrete floors heated? They better be at these prices.

And excuse me most bownstones are light and airy!

I do like the garage that will house the escape mobile.

We love this place - it is really affordable and it so close to us - had husbands birthday there and bascially took over the place on satudday night - the staff, owner and hostess (the ownerswife) were wonderful. Love the food.

No one is supposed to be planting edibles in the ground of your gardens!?! You are supposed to put a raised bed and add your own soil. How common!

One of the links first posted to my question sends us to a post that says to attract bats you should soak the bat house in bat urine. I am willing to do that in well covered flesh.

I walk past City Hall everyday and night and there is definltiy a lot of activity there - perhaps you found a lazy bat.

I will continue the urine search.

Posted by: Ljubitca at May 5, 2009 1:01 PM in response to How to attract bats

And where does one get bat urine - surely that you can order???

Posted by: Ljubitca at May 5, 2009 11:56 AM in response to How to attract bats

There must be a water source otherwise where would all the mosquitos have come from? Who doesnt love bats?! They are winged kittens.

I just have to convince my husband.

We once ordered a bag of ladybugs for an aphid problem I wish we could order a bag of bats.

Sorry Rob how common was not a reference to the NJ fireworks but rather not knowing were they were from (when you saw them). I grew up in Jersey City and the Liberty State Park Fireworks were amazing and they were all we had as we couldnt see the Macys - and now I find myself on the wrong side again. I just looked up cruises for the 4th -(I know how common!) There are actually $300+ pp cruises for the 4th of July - Christ!

Hey thanks for the smoothing over NOP - I grew up in a house much like this in Jersey City and my parents are still there and well that house sort of scares the crap out of me too. I love woodwork and old houses and such but I need light and these pictures hopefully do not do this house any justice. As that hallway screams of you being chased by the knife-weilding wood nymph that crawled out of the woodwork.

I long for the day that I open brownstoner and it doesn't have an account of this tiresome opening. No other account of constuction would glorify this waste of time, virtually and in reality. It's great that a store is opening but I don't want to have to read about evey minute detail. Christ, this old house is brilliant - this is not. The only thing that would redeem this series is a blog about its dismantling - I mean really, who is the owner of BIRD sleeping with at Brownstoner to get such coverage? The account of my cat's day is more interesting.

So Hanco's on Bergen beats Nicky's on Atlantic any day. Never went to the Tea Lounge on Court street nor the PS locations. So no comment on that - but something like Hancos would be a nice additions any day - Hancos for some reason never gets the press that Nickys does.

But to the one comment about Lee Lee's Valise in carroll gardens on court - and please understand that I mean no harm and no offense - I really think that store isnt going to last - we live around the corner - and I by no means would categorize the shop for women of normal size. Women of normal size are medium and large. Women who would shop there must be much, much larger and it just doesnt seem to fit into a hood where people do so much walking. That store is always empty. I dont think it would last in PS either.
