Centrifugal roof fans
Now that it's chilly I have noticed in our 3 unit brownstone that the fans (there are two of them)that ventilate 3 baths and 3 kitchens when not running (they run from 7am to 10pm) let cold air back into the house. The fans sit in housing on top of the roof. My question(s) is there a way to stop cold air comming back in when the fans are not running. The fan does not have a damper and the cap is a reglar aluminum cap.
Can you retro fit a damper below the fan? what about dampers or mechanical louvres on a cap itself?
How do any of you deal with this? or do you just run the fans 24/7?
Thanks
PS: Apologies if this is posted in the wrong topic area.

Is it in the hot water only? Do you have a traditional gas water heater? If it is it may be a harmelss chemical reaction. This is link to AO Smith water heater support page on the subject
