That just somehow sounds like two Cyclops talking.

I agree with everything 11217 said, including the part about FP being a great beer garden (with an actual "Garten," in the German sense).

JIPS wrote a review about Der Schwarze Kölner on November 19, 2009 1:32 PM

Steinhof is Austrian (though I find the food there inedible). This place looks okay, but it's not a beer garden (since there's no outdoor space, i.e., garden); more of a beer hall.

"Little push" in Cologne dialect is "Stößche" (with an umlaut; the ß is not a B and sounds like an s).

JIPS wrote a review about Miracle Grill on November 11, 2009 3:31 PM

Walked by Monday night and it was closed - there's a sign on the gate that says they're closed on Mondays (forget how long). Ate there a long time ago. Food was okay, but it's more Tex-Mex than Mexican. I haven't been there in a long time, despite living nearby.

Tara, is this what you have?

If so, looks like $350 to $500 is about right.

Rob, the dogs are $4 to $6, not $10, and 12 oz. beers (not pints) are only $3. Plus, these aren't crappy "who knows what's in there" hot dogs. The meat is high quality and sourced from an Austrian butcher. Not saying it's worth paying $5 for a hot dog every day, but it's worth paying more for a better quality product. Don't like it? Don't buy it. But why b*tch about everything constantly?

Ignore it because it's smarmy and useless. He's not asking for "fancy schmancey". He's asking to avoid falling plaster and leaks. Those are health hazards and violations of code, not "lifestyle" issues. And it's illegal for the landlord to retaliate by jacking up the price.

Posted by: JIPS at August 7, 2009 10:54 AM in response to Landlord Neglected Building

Ignore Rob's comment, as usual. Even if it's a walkup rental on Myrtle, you shouldn't have to dodge falling plaster and leaks on your way into your apartment. Call 311 and report the landlord. He should be required to maintain the building in a livable condition. He's clearly not doing that now.

Actually, the Yiddish word is "shvartzer" and it means black, just as it does in German, from which it is derived (as is most Yiddish). It may be used in a pejorative sense by some speakers, but it does not mean n***er.

A cedilla is useful for French speakers, not Latinos. That would be a tilda.

Dave, you can also just write an "e" after the "o" and it's the same sound as the umlaut.

@joe the bummer, you not only contradicted yourself, you made another dubious assumption about the neighborhood (i.e., it's a "worse area"). If you don't know the neighborhood, you should walk around (during the day, so you're not scared).

The food here is awful and not at all authentic. Everything we ordered was overcooked, except the green beans which were almost raw. The service could have been more attentive (for example, I had to get up and get salt and pepper on my own, even though it wasn't that busy the night we were there). Would not recommend it at all. Ambience is total kitsch and not what you find in Germany/Austria/Switzerland (it seems this restaurant wants to be both German and Austrian). Thumbs emphatically down.

I think we know now the one person who thinks it's transcendent.

You decided on Caroll Gardens for its access to the Cobble Hill Theater? Does that not sound a tad strange? Never mind the fact that from Clinton and Amity (where I lived for four years), it's maybe a 10-15 walk to the theater. You may prefer CG, but CH is certainly not isolated from all the restaurants on Court and as far away as, gasp, Smith.

I ate at the Court Street location once and there were mice scurrying around the patio in back. A few months later it was shut down by the BOH for about a week. The food was good, but needless to say I haven't been back since.

Polemicist, when did I say I wanted free groceries? In fact, I said I don't begrudge developers who want to make money, but I also think there's too much focus on "luxury" buildings and not enough emphasis on low- and middle-class housing (by which I mean properties for less than a million bucks - I'm not asking for a $100,000 condo on Prospect Park West). I don't know the details of this particular property, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in line with most other developments in New York in recent years. Now it's just a hole in the ground. Hence, schadenfreude.

If you're going to berate me, at least get the gist of what I'm saying right. I think YOU need to get a grip.

Puh-leeze. The developer wasn't building high-density housing for the good of the community, he was doing it for a profit (otherwise he'd build low- or medium-income housing, rather than the "luxury" condos everyone is building nowadays). That's okay, because this is a capitalist economy, but when he falls down on his ass, we're entitled to a little schadenfreude. I, for one, am not going to feel bad for developers who knock a house down and leave a hole in the ground.

Now I'm confused - I thought Carroll Gardens was just south of Cobble Hill (i.e., south of Degraw Street). Is Carroll Gardens different from Carroll Gardens Historic District? If not, what is the neighborhood south of Degraw called?

Very expensive for what it is, which is a glorified sports bar (it replaced Cousins II, which was a good value for what it was, which was a sports bar). Good beer selection and the food is ambitious, but it doesn't always succeed (don't order anything that has more than two ingredients in the name).

There are actually two properties boarded up on or near 7th Avenue - the one at 7th and 2nd (next to the Met supermarket) and the one near the corner of 7th and 3rd (behind Barrio restaurant). I don't know what the story is behind them, but it's a shame they are being used (and haven't, it appears, for some time).

I've never had a problem with the service in either one, and I think the food is good to very good. Joya can be mobbed on weekend nights (and even some week nights), but definitely a good deal considering how ridiculously inexpensive it is.

A) It's not a run-on sentence.

B) It's schadenfreude.
