Subflooring Woes
I live in a rental that is carpeted in both the bedroom and the living room. Underneath the carpet is just subflooring. Over the past 1.5-2 months, I've noticed that the there are sections of the floor that have "popped up." When I walk over these spots (very noticeable in bare feet) it feels like sharp-ish points or mounds in some areas. What could be causing this? Could the nails holding down the floorboards have simply popped up and allowed the corresponding subfloor piece to do the same? Should I just break out a hammer and try to make these sections flush again? Or do I need to call the landlord and have him bring out a pro? (I prefer to do whatever I can myself so as to save my landlord $$$) Thanks in advance for your help!

Clogged Tub Drains
My bathtub drain is severely clogged...again. I don't want to waste the landlord's money by asking him to have a plumber come out and snake it. In the past, I had noticed that by dumping several pots of boiling hot water down the bathroom sink drain, the tub drain was flushed clear and the problem was solved. This time it's not working. Liquid Plummr and it's other counterparts have failed to do the job. I suspect that the pipes in my apartment are quite old (I already replaced a portion of pipe under my kitchen sink that had basically rotted and burst) so I'm wary of using extra strong chemicals. Any suggestions (cheap ones!) that I could try and do on my own without asking my landlord to spend $$$ on a plumber?

New Floors for Rental Apt.
I’ve been living in the same rental apartment for 10 years now, and when I moved in, everything was brand new. The living room and bedroom are carpeted, but as you can imagine, after 10 years the carpet needs to go. Besides the look of it, I have severe allergies and asthma (and a shedding cat). I want to convince my landlord that it's time to change out the flooring, particularly to a solid surface floor. Because he is so nice and my rent is so low, I'd like to approach him with some super low-cost options and maybe even some options I could install myself. I’ve been looking online at vinyl planks that have the look of hardwood. Vinyl was my first choice simply because the subfloor in my apartment is EXTREMELY uneven. In the bedroom when walking towards the bed, it actually feels like you are going uphill! The living room isn’t as bad as that, but it’s definitely not level. It was my understanding that vinyl peel and stick planks can be placed on an unlevel floor without using a leveling compound (and maybe just using a self leveling underlayment.) Am I wrong? I’ve read up on a product called Novalis and it seems to get great reviews on gardenweb (picture of Novalis planks seen here - http://tinyurl.com/oodqcy). It’s cheap and would suit my purposes. My living room is about 8’10”x11’2” and the bedroom is about 9’6”x18’. So, figuring that I’d need about 280 square feet of flooring (to be safe), it will cost just over $300. Do you think that flooring would work on an uneven floor? Or will it just peel up on me? I’m super handy so I think I could install it myself. If necessary, how hard is it to level out a floor? Could I do that myself? (the subfloor appears to be plywood planks.) Is there any other super cheap product I could suggest to the landlord besides more carpet?

ENY, instead of twirling my hair, I just make suggestive gestures with my ciggies. LOL J/K

Expert, if there's enough hair 'lower' to twirl around the fingers, I'd say tell the girl to stop flirting with you and introduce her to a weed whacker.

Oh dear, THL! That's probably the song I hate of hers the most! No, wait...I take that back. That "do you believe in life after love" garbage is the worst.

ENY, what am I supposed to do when it's been raining and my hair is nappy? I can't risk playing with it cause then I may not be able to get my fingers out of my hair. :-)

I don't like Cher either. She falls into the 'entertainer' category with Madonna.

Rap needs to go back to what it was when we had Public Enemy, BDP/KRS One, X Clan...that type of stuff. They were actually talking about something other than jewels, cars w/ spinnin' rims and hos.

Madonna is only good when you have had too much to drink and find yourself on a dance floor under a disco ball with college friends.

she's singing softly in the beginning and by the end, she's screaming her damned head off.
ROFL! So true. I hate Celine Dion. If I have to hear that damned song from that stupid ass boat movie one more frickin' time I'll be headed off to Bellevue for an extended stay.

Of course Beyonce is no great singer. Her appeal is in her looks and her dancing. It's like what I say about the diff between Whitney and Madonna. Whitney is a singer. Madonna is an entertainer. Madonna can't sing for shit. It seems as though most people like her and folks like Britney, Rhianna, and Beyonce for a reason entirely exclusive of the singing voice. I've heard better singing on the subways as well.

They are doing good and steady work over there. The building actually looks nicer in person than what the photos and the rendering show (not that the photo or rendering are bad in any way.) Some folks still miss the parking lot that was there, but I rarely saw more than 3 or 4 cars in it at any given time. And the ones I did see belonged to the folks who were employed as delivery drivers for the Dominos across the street.

Oy! I don't want to get into this discussion again :-(
Benson, I agreed with THL's post in that I too grow quite weary of your rants. I made no mention of any personal digs you may have made. In fact, I told Bxgirl that whatever past arguments you and I have had or any that you have had with other posters where wholly irrelevant to today's issue you brought up. Check out my post at 1:16 pm.

The bar scene is great over here Rob. Won't be as much fun as we had at the lesbo bar, but fun nonetheless :) South seems like it will last longer than Vin Rouge for the simple fact that the folks in this nabe and those willing to walk over here aren't so much into sitting at a place that caters mainly to the wine and cheese crowd. I've also taken note that the drinkers I've seen so far in South are decidedly beer lovers like myself. The main question will be whether they can sustain themselves with Ellis right next door. But like I said, I think South will get the older, quieter drinkers while Ellis will continue to pull the younger crowd. Ellis' Thursday night karaoke has been quite loud lately so that may help to push more people to South.

There's a very funny episode of the Golden Girls where Sophia and Rose go into business selling BLT's to construction workers for lunch. They ran out of tomatoes so they started using potato slices instead. Rose said no one would want to buy a BLP sandwich. Sophia goes, "Just say it really fast and they won't notice. Baconlettuceandpotato!"

And, incidentally, the sushi place next door to South is currently running a special of 19.95 per person all you can eat. I don't eat sushi so I can't say if they are any good or not. But, if anyone is desiring sushi and wants to be cheap about it, you may wanna check that out.

I tried Little Buddy's roasted red pepper feta muffins...not too great for me, but loved the peanut butter cookie! Been meaning to stop into south. they redid the space a bit (added booths, did something out back in the small outdoor space). The past few nights they've had quite a few customers in there. They will probably wind up catering to the folks who feel a bit too old for Ellis or just want something a smidge quieter.

Denton, no matter...just me and two cats so plenty of space :)
This is the house I told you about on 18th that they are trying to sell for 1.5 mill...laughable (seems they just dropped the price to 1.1 - still laughable to me). And their claim that they are getting 5k a month in rent is the biggest lie I've heard in a long time. http://tinyurl.com/yfne7rl
