Holiday Party - This Thursday!

Hey folks! Don’t forget, the Brownstoner Holiday Party is this Thursday, December 3rd! We are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Festivus and the Winter Solstice all in one shindig (we try to be all inclusive). The party will take place at The Bell House - 149 7th Street, between 2nd & 3rd Avenues, in Gowanus or if you prefer, West Park Slope or GoCaGa (Brooklyn brokers, I’m lookin’ at you!). Our festivities will begin at 6:00pm and go on till the last Brownstoner drops.
Please remember that we are having a Goofy Gift Grab-bag event, so bring one or two ridiculous dollar store items to add. PLEASE DO NOT SPEND MORE THAN ONE DOLLAR ON EACH GRAB-BAG GIFT! If you can, please wrap the gift or have a small gift bag (available at dollar stores for about $.33 each) to place the gift in. We need as many people as possible to participate in the grab-bag so please please please remember to drop by the dollar store this week and pick something up. Use your imagination and choose the funniest thing you can find in there!
In addition to the grab-bag, we are also doing a Funny Flash-back. We ask that attendees bring an old photo of themselves. Find that picture where you have big hair, hideous 70’s clothing, a diaper on your head (or all three in one photo if you’ve got it!). Give a laugh, get a laugh! Fear not, we won't be keeping your photos...we just want to laugh at you while you laugh at us :-)

Subflooring Woes

I live in a rental that is carpeted in both the bedroom and the living room. Underneath the carpet is just subflooring. Over the past 1.5-2 months, I've noticed that the there are sections of the floor that have "popped up." When I walk over these spots (very noticeable in bare feet) it feels like sharp-ish points or mounds in some areas. What could be causing this? Could the nails holding down the floorboards have simply popped up and allowed the corresponding subfloor piece to do the same? Should I just break out a hammer and try to make these sections flush again? Or do I need to call the landlord and have him bring out a pro? (I prefer to do whatever I can myself so as to save my landlord $$$) Thanks in advance for your help!

Clogged Tub Drains

My bathtub drain is severely clogged...again. I don't want to waste the landlord's money by asking him to have a plumber come out and snake it. In the past, I had noticed that by dumping several pots of boiling hot water down the bathroom sink drain, the tub drain was flushed clear and the problem was solved. This time it's not working. Liquid Plummr and it's other counterparts have failed to do the job. I suspect that the pipes in my apartment are quite old (I already replaced a portion of pipe under my kitchen sink that had basically rotted and burst) so I'm wary of using extra strong chemicals. Any suggestions (cheap ones!) that I could try and do on my own without asking my landlord to spend $$$ on a plumber?

New Floors for Rental Apt.

I’ve been living in the same rental apartment for 10 years now, and when I moved in, everything was brand new. The living room and bedroom are carpeted, but as you can imagine, after 10 years the carpet needs to go. Besides the look of it, I have severe allergies and asthma (and a shedding cat). I want to convince my landlord that it's time to change out the flooring, particularly to a solid surface floor. Because he is so nice and my rent is so low, I'd like to approach him with some super low-cost options and maybe even some options I could install myself. I’ve been looking online at vinyl planks that have the look of hardwood. Vinyl was my first choice simply because the subfloor in my apartment is EXTREMELY uneven. In the bedroom when walking towards the bed, it actually feels like you are going uphill! The living room isn’t as bad as that, but it’s definitely not level. It was my understanding that vinyl peel and stick planks can be placed on an unlevel floor without using a leveling compound (and maybe just using a self leveling underlayment.) Am I wrong? I’ve read up on a product called Novalis and it seems to get great reviews on gardenweb (picture of Novalis planks seen here - http://tinyurl.com/oodqcy). It’s cheap and would suit my purposes. My living room is about 8’10”x11’2” and the bedroom is about 9’6”x18’. So, figuring that I’d need about 280 square feet of flooring (to be safe), it will cost just over $300. Do you think that flooring would work on an uneven floor? Or will it just peel up on me? I’m super handy so I think I could install it myself. If necessary, how hard is it to level out a floor? Could I do that myself? (the subfloor appears to be plywood planks.) Is there any other super cheap product I could suggest to the landlord besides more carpet?

I was going to walk over to that house today, but got too tired. The post office wore me out :-( Perhaps tomorrow. My friend who took care of the wee ones last time will likely be doing it for me again. Bless her!

I'd say it's about time to have a little chat with him! I know several married couples (been married for 6 years and more) who still really enjoy and look forward to doing the deed together. You gotta find ways to make it new and fun.

Biff, the Chocolate Police will be at your door in 2 minutes. Be prepared to put your hands behind your back, get cuffed, frisked (twice for good measure) and then taken to the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge to be stripped and flogged. :-p

If any of these thoughts are occurring while in the act, some of you are doing it wrong :-) The only thoughts that should be had at that time are, "mmmm...yeah...oh yeah...like that...love that...wooooo!"

Gem, check out the google street view on that little house...the transformation is amazing. The ad stated that they did a top-to-bottom renovation and the street view vs. the sale ad shows just how much they did.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 8, 2010 4:14 PM in response to Open Thread

Gem, considering that that house is almost on top of the Gowanus Expressway, I'm thinking something like $350-400K tops. I just love how tiny and efficient it is. Perfect size for a single woman with two cats :-) Wrong location though.

Hey Gem. I'm just dreaming :-) I really prefer a single family (don't like the idea of tenants). My ideal location is between 15-18th Streets/4-6 ave. But, I found this cute listing this weekend that I love: http://tinyurl.com/ygcokdj

But, I'd get rid of the full bath on the main level and use that window to create a door to the backyard.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 8, 2010 3:57 PM in response to Open Thread

Hiya Expert...I'm address challenged and sleep deprived! Things are still sucking so I've got a bag ready and Arecibo on speed dial to take me to the airport when the call comes in.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 8, 2010 3:49 PM in response to Open Thread

The one for sale though is 281 18th Street. I had wanted to see what it last sold for (looks like the broker overpaid in '07) It was originally listed for 1.5 and now it's down to 999k.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 8, 2010 3:42 PM in response to Open Thread

I've lost my mind (nothing new, right!). I was putting in 17th Street when I really meant to be putting in 18th Street. Argh. Not getting any sleep is ruining my brain!

287 17th Street in Brooklyn.

ACRIS property search says "Street Code is Zero" and pulls up no info.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 8, 2010 3:33 PM in response to Open Thread

Jessi, I was trying to get the block and lot from the DOB site to plug into ACRIS, but DOB is telling me it's not a valid address.

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at February 8, 2010 3:30 PM in response to Open Thread

Hi people :-)

Question...I'm looking up two properties on the DOB and ACRIS sites, but I keep getting an error that the property does not exist. I know for a fact that these properties do exist. I checked out other random addresses on that street and those come up fine. One of the properties is currently for sale and the other looks abandoned. Would that stop the homes from showing up? (I really don't think it would, but I'm grasping at straws here.)
