But they're going to be close to 'city life' - a quick subway or cab ride away as opposed to 1 hour away by car. It's the best of all worlds for them - if they make the schools work that is.

Congratulations Wasder! Many years of happiness in your beautiful new home!

"Better start to learn how to fix stuff!" Do you have lots to do?

"I guess I just spent way too much time spent in front of it as a kid. Like some of us do here now ;)"

I hear ya THL and thanks for the clip! It doesn't matter what the room looks like, I always think of that episode when talking about a white room.

Remember that all white living room Rhoda Morgenstern designed for Lou Grant?

Kind of neat in a wabi sabi kind of way.

I have heard people get great results with a product called CabinetCoat by Insl-X. Brushmarks smooth out and the finish is supposed to be durable. Limited colors though I think

Even though you would work indoors, I would try to ventilate as much as possible. You wouldn't have to worry about overspray though.

I_haz_TWO_toilets - have you considered Saratoga or the Capitol region? For its size, which is not very big, Saratoga is extremely livable and walkable, and the Albany region does offer work opportunities.

It's not commuting distance to NYC, though there is an Amtrak station there, so car free visiting would be easy.

I'm in the same boat as you. I posted in the suburban thread a couple of weeks back how we may just finally leave Brooklyn. I think we are leaning towards a suburb of NYC though.

Anyway, just thought I would put the suggestion out there to you and others in similar positions. I would consider Saratoga myself, but my in-laws live there :P

Stem is very clever, but I really like Juniper also.

Thanks wasder for the well wishes. I thought for sure I would check in this morning and see "Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out"! LOL

Good luck in your new house!

You know, maybe this registered user thing is a good thing indeed.

Count me in amongst those contemplating the move, and actually leaning towards it.

With 2 very active boys, I feel as though we need the space. I'm not talking McMansion space. But 3 modest bedrooms would be nice.

I'm glad that there are those in thie thread who are objective enough to realize "These theories while interesting, are much too "all or nothing" to be considered a realistic fore-shadowing of the future. " (Thanks townhouselady) I haven't seen this before in any other suburbs vs. city thread in Brownstoner, and I appreciate this intelligent discussion.

In Kuntsler's book, the Geography of Nowhere, he also maintains that his own preference is for town, not city or the suburb. He's in Saratoga Springs - a place I love except for lack of diversity.

We're finally looking at the usual suspects of Larchmont, Hudson Rriver towns, Montclair, etc. I think we will likely choose Montclair for a bunch of reasons. They all have a bit of sidewalk culture and decent train service to the city, and I am hoping living there won't compare to a totally car dependent suburb with no sidewalks.

Having previously lived in an area that is the extreme opposite of a city, somewhere btwn exurbs and rural, I can comfortably say that no matter how great the hiking, lakes, nature, etc. you will still live in your car and it's incredibly isolating. So, like Kuntsler, my family and I will vote for "town". I would prefer to stay, but I don't think I can make it work. I've been visiting this site because my heart belongs to Brooklyn, but I feel the time has come to make the move.

I hope we won't regret it. :/

Steve, I am envisioning etched glass as a solution, not stained glass. Its subtlty will match the subtle carvings.

What do you think?

Aah, a subject I can sink my teeth into...

I used to live in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn but am now in suburban hell. We moved to this suburb for my husband's job, but now that he works from home, there is absolutely no reason for us to be here.

Would I love to move Park Slope? Yes, of course, but I have a family now and I need space, so I will likely go back to the neighborhood I know best.

My friends who are still there discuss with me the influence of new immigrants in the neighborhood, good and bad. The best of it I think is that they report that anyone who was stereotypically 'Bay Ridge' has already left and gone to Staten Island, Jersey or beyond. But the 'cool' ones have stayed, so it's now and interesting complex mix.

Do you have a family? I belong to a Bay Ridge Parents yahoo group and at least once a week, there is someone saying they just sold their brownstone or Manhattan co-op and bought a place in Bay Ridge and they think the new neighborhood is great. They might have made a decision also based on schools which are pretty good (maybe even better than 321) which you may not need to make.

I think that Bay Ridge's culture is food. Nothing high end, but a great variety of good down home eats of every ethnicity. Years ago, Time Out NY had Bay Ridge Restaurants as the COVER story.

Check out Three Jolly Pigeons. It reminds me of the Brooklyn Inn on Hoy & Bergen. Definitely cool people there of all ages and types. Admittedly it might be the exception to the nightlife.

Like the previous poster said, check it out! Make your own cool.

Yep, that was the last piece of the puzzle for me. And until this afternoon I was still on pins and needles waiting for all of the chickens to be hatched. Now there are no more potential hitches in my master plan.

I haz--better late than never to the party. Thanks for the nice words.

Internet-less due to f*ing Time Warner...how did you do it?

Congrats, wasder, the entry looks great...hope you enjoy your house much!

cmu--I have had Time Warner cable for internet, phone, and TV for a while but they couldn't come around til mid next week. But apparently one of my neighbors has a powerful router and an unprotected network so I am in luck.
