I used Warren Greene- he was definitely the most reasonably priced, always showed up when he said he would, and did a lovely job. And his workers are pleasant and cleaned up after themselves (unprompted!) He did most of my gutted brownstone.

Just be sure to get multiple estimates, and ask for references. You will learn a lot from talking to previous clients.

Getting contractor recommendations is a tricky matter. I recently recommended a masonry contractor to my next door neighbor. I had hired the guy twice in the past with very satisfactory results albeit some communication issues due to the fact that english is not his native language. But, just the other day, I learned from my neighbor that she had to fire the guy because he wasn't doing the job properly and they got into a bitter dispute over price settlement, complete with the contractor threatening to put a mechanics lien on her house and take her to court. They finally settled out of court. I don't know who was right, but I now fully comprehend why people are hesitant to give contractor references. One person's old reliable can become another's contractor nightmare. Same thing has happened to me before, when I hired somebody from a trusted referral source and came away wondering how the referral could have been so misguided.

Best advice I can give you is to do your own research. Talk to lots of people. Get multiple references for RECENTLY COMPLETED work (not jobs from 3 years ago). Ask other contractors about who has what reputation (they generally don't mind ratting each other out).
