Tin Ceiling Installation?
Can anyone recommend someone to install tin ceilings in about 300 sq feet of space? Any idea how much this might cost (parts + labor)?

Clogged (New) Dishwasher?
Hi all. I just moved into a new place, with a brand new dishwasher. The building is a pre-war condo conversion... so the plumbing is all new, as are the appliances.
My roommate used the dishwasher yesterday, and this morning we noticed an inch or two of water just hanging around on the bottom, not draining. I've removed the filter and whatever else I see there, but no action.
Any advice? Is there something I need to know about first-time dishwashing? Could it be the plumbing? (Everything else works fine, plumbing-wise, in my apt and the building as a whole, as far as I can tell...)

Re-Arranging Baseboard Heating
Hi... can anyone recommend a plumber to help me with re-arranging or changing the size/layout of one of my baseboard radiators? I just need it to be shortened by about 3 feet.
Anyone have an idea of how much something like this might cost...?
thanks

Weatherstripping Help?
Howdy. Looking for someone to help me professionally weatherstrip a couple of doors. This is primarily for sound leakage, not weather or heating. Any suggestions/numbers/emails?
Thanks...

Wall Build vs. Baseboard Heating?
Hi folks. I work (when I can find the work) in sound design and music composition - and I just bought a place in Crown Heights that has a rec room.
In said rec room, I'm going to need to do a lot of soundproofing - and my first step is (possibly) going to be to build some sort of wall in the room, because the stairs leading to the upper floor are spiral and therefore have no door. So, I need a way to block some of the sound from getting upstairs and into the rest of the building.
With that said, I have one small snag - the baseboard heating. In my beautiful little drawing there, the baseboard units are the blue rectangles on the left.
Anyone know if they can either be cut into, partially removed, re-sized, or what? I know little about home renovation and almost nothing about baseboard heating...

New Crown Heights Resident
Hi all - I've just moved to Crown Heights (Franklin and Park Place) and want advice on what's good around the neighborhood. I've already found some cool stuff on Washington and on Vanderbilt... there's one or two little shops and such on Franklin... anything else?

Sink Replacement - How?
Hi folks. I'm on the verge of closing on a small unit. I love most things about the apt, but one this that I don't like is the way the bathrooms were finished - particularly this sink.
I'd like to replace it - how difficult is this? I'm a complete newbie, this is the first property I've owned, so I literally know nothing about this.
I've found a sink that I do like:

Any advice? Anyone want this sink if I get rid of it?

Whoah. WTF? Re: that Brooklynian post... had no idea it was dramatic like that.

Another question... that floor looks really cool. What shade/finish/type of wood is it...? I've got a lower level with an ugly tile floor that I kind of despise, looking for a lighter shade to work with...

Right on. More ways to get caffeinated in my 'hood.

I did... the shit keeps peeling off on it's own. I'm hoping for something a little more heavy-duty...

I had the BEST GUY EVER. I was a small-time client with no big payout and he treated me like I was supremely important - always was available or got back to me right away, answered all of my questions promptly no matter how small or unimportant-seeming, and once all was said and done he even sent me off with a bottle of his home-made wine that was actually great. I recommend him as a good broker and as a good person:

That Bergen place looks pretty nice, actually - wouldn't take much to get it spruced up properly...

Wow! Thanks... I'm seriously going to print this page.
Just did a li'l walkaround around the neighborhood and saw several of the places you mentioned... plus a few more. Despite a few sideways glances from your thuggier types, I really like the overall feel of the neighborhood... which is why, of course, I moved here...

Actually, I'm curious as to how much your gut renovation is costing altogether - I'm not a fan of the tiles in the bathroom either, and was planning to replace them eventually; if it's cost-efficient to just do the whole thing in one go, I'd consider that. Do you mind telling me? If you don't want to share that information on the forum, my email is alexander@ghostnoteltd.com...

I appreciate it and I will! I've also looked around online and I realize that there are many, many sinks out there that are cheaper and still nice...

It does have 4 legs. I was planning to hire someone, unless of course it'd be exorbitant. Think it would be?
Posted by: Ghostnote at September 17, 2009 4:13 PM in response to Sink Replacement - How?
Probably selling... but who knows? Trade? Other than the price of purchasing a new sink, I don't know how difficult or expensive it would be to install a new one. I'll probably base my price (or lack thereof) on the results of this investigation...

Just make an offer! It's not about what he can afford, it's about what the property's worth... or what he feels it should be worth.

Hi there -
I checked a place out in 14 Butler a while back - it was priced great but something about it just stopped me. The place had character but had been poorly cared for, and definitely needed some work, which in itself is not that bad, but I also got a bit of a shady vibe from the building manager (who also said he was the "broker") who showed it to me. He was unable to answer several legal questions; I had noticed some leak damage from an apartment above, and he couldn't tell me exactly who would take responsibility should such a thing happen again (among other issues).
There's also a short thread here:

oops -- just saw this post (been busy renovating). We've just finished the rough in work, and have bought all the fixtures except the towel rack, toilet paper holder thing, etc so there are a few more things to buy, but the budget shouldn't change by much.
I'm looking at $15k total. I saved a few places here and there by doing some work myself, hiring an out of work friend who used to work in construction (lots of those people around, evidently), and we picked pretty basic finishes. I used run of the mill hex and subway tiles, no fancy glass tiles or anything like that.

You can get a plumber to install a new, smaller heater.

Earlier this year I bought a house in Crown Heights and highly recommend my mortgage broker, whom I found through a friend:
HAROLD I. DUBIN

102 Elm Street Walpole, MA 02081 508-850-4104

Harold is a hard-working broker that patiently explained the complexities of financing my first home, was able to trouble-shoot on other aspects of the deal when necessary, and moreover - got me the best rate going!

I'm in minnesota, but my family is in brooklyn. i'd do it for you if i were there. I just lengthened one the other day.
you'll know if it's fine tube if underneath the cover, there is a copper tube with aluminum fins. so the process is this
1. drain the water
2. cut the pipe(s)
3. cut the sheet metal--can be done with sheet metal shears. may have to unscrew the back to get under it.
4. take out length of pipe
5 use copper connectors to fit pipe back together
6. solder connection(s)
7. fill and bleed out air
8 put covers and end cap back on
Ill ask the family if they know a good plumber. or ask on this forum

I have done work like this on my house but I had to extend piping for a new fin base board heating for my foyer. I have a plumber friend that helped me and can possibly help you. Email is hvacr007@gmail.com. Tell him that Anthony sent you.
