P.S. 139 just off of Cortelyou has two decent, if somewhat crowded, mini-schools - Flatbush Academy and The Brotherhood. You might look into those two programs.

Uh... Doesn't the Monroe Street agent know that Clinton Hill ends at Classon?

Hard to see how HD designation would have any impact on shared driveway liability. My personal view, having heard many stories from credible people about those folks, is that they are completely off their rocker.

Well, one obvious objection is that HD designation sort of throws a wrench in their maniacal desire to sell their house and mega FAR rights as a teardown to a developer for big bucks. It's the driveway objection that I don;t get.

I'm still wondering what relevance to the historic district designation the shared driveway had in the mind of the owners of 189. They apparently brought it up at the LPC hearing. Can anyone clarify?

"let's move on to Parkside and Chester. Is someone going to come up with a cutesy/catchy name for them too?"
How about the "Parcheesi HD"?

Can an empty lot be made part of an historic district? If so, does the owner of the empty lot at 185 lose the right to build on it? It would make one heck of a community garden :-).

"That's kinda nifty... but 12 houses makes an "historic district"?"
It is when everything else of historic value on the block has already been decimated.

You're paying a premium for the in-your-face "tempus fugit" factor. Living in a clock ought to get you to live your life to the max.

"the skywatch on flatbush & parkside in PLG was in early december 08 after 5 violent crimes happened within the span of a week in late november."
Missed that one - I was referring to Skywatch on Flatbush and Lincoln before that. The larger point is that it is, IMO, a totally useless piece of police work and waste of money that could be better spent in a myriad of other ways.

We had Skywatch on Flatbush Ave in PLG a while back - lasted a few days, ruffled a few feathers and then disappeared. Now that's effective policing!

What a tremendous loser. Dogs need off-leash time and 99% do not cause problems for anyone. The system as is works fine.

""Best offer will be accepted" on the Stuy house?"
It's actually best offer "well be accepted" in the ad :-).
Isn't this across from the limestone mansions at the Fulton end of Stuyvesant Ave - right across from the triangular green space?

Matieu Eugene has caved and will formally reverse his earlier position according to folks in the know. He know believes that all of the homes should be included in the proposed district.

I hope whoever replies to this will do so based on personal experience. Some of the most ridiculous things get said about neighborhoods by people whose only experience with them comes from dipping into the hysterical collective fear zone.

"I certainly do feel for the owners of 189, they seem to have been royally screwed by circumstances beyond their control, and I hope they are able to win any lawsuit against the owner of 185."
Empathy is a laudable emotion but should be spared for the truly deserving. Were it not for the actions of the owners of 189, 185 would still be standing, a well-liked family and their tenant would still live there and the movement to create the HD would not have gotten the spark it needed from the destruction of 185. The owners of 189 are truly unusually awful people who dug there own grave - may they rot in it for eternity.

Are you proposing an eminent domain seizure of private property for a commercial development? Wait... Bruce, is that you?

It would be great if this came in time to prevent 189 Ocean Avenue from being sold as a development property. Corcoran just dropped the price on that property to $1.675MM but in this market, I doubt anyone is lining up.

here's a novel thought... buy a place that you can afford to send your kids to the public schools? these questions come up So much. people buy a place because they want to be 'diverse' but then do not want to send their kids to the school district. maybe you and your offspring should find a place that 'fits'? maybe nyc isnt for you. seriously. it just drives the rent up for long time residents and people who want kids. if the schools are 'bad' and you arent willing to do anything about it, then brooklyn, maybe even nyc isnt for you. sorry you cant afford the upper east side, but stop trying to make other peoples lives worse because you think you should live here.

I live right next to PS 139 on Rugby/Cortelyou... the little rugrats seems well behaved. Actually they had a fire drill recently and I saw the little gangs come out. They were adorable and listened to their teachers.
Does that mean anything?
(I'm thinking not all schools filled with 5-11 year olds are that pleasant.)
Also, it's very much a Benetton ad... though, I don't know of any Brooklyn schools that wouldn't be diverse... except maybe the Yeshivas in Borough Park.

Oh, but I forgot... Don't move to "Victorian Flatbush." It's basically a hell hole packed with gang violence, sex offenders, drugs and prostitutes. (I don't want my rent to go up!)
