"The Pratt Area Community Council has sponsored several affordable housing projects in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill area over the past several years, East New York, as has the NYC HDC"
Agreed. Otherwise, the housing in the area is market-rate, i.e., not "affordable." Programs like those sponsored by PACC are quite worthy, but by definition are limited in number and availability. Meanwhile, the majority of people living in the area (as I did for several years) pay market rate.

The "affordable" units won't necessarily be cheaper than the "market rate" units. They are all subsidized- Ratner has gotten a bouquet of subsidies, and he will continue to get them.
Posted by: harriet at March 12, 2010 9:58 AM
The "affordable" housing that results from this project develops will be the FIRST available in that area for a long time.
The available housing in the immediate area is far from "affordable" Unless you're fortunate enough to enjoy rent-control or -stabilization. I rented for years at 521 Dean Street and in the surrounding neighborhood and the prices there are NOT "affordable."
The neighborhood was pricey when Ratner started his plan and remains pricey. If the housing AY develops is indeed below market rate, it will already be cheaper than the alternative for the majority of people, if not "affordable."

"The foreign auto manufacturers all seem to be able to provide decent wages and benefits here. And, they are profitable."
Of course they are. That's because despite their U.S. operations, the majority of those makers' heavy manufacturing is still done overseas in low-wage countries.
"Union legacy issues" are certainly a significant cost to U.S. auto manufacturers. But to say they are "the deciding factor" is an oversimplification.
Posted by: East New York at March 11, 2010 4:30 PM in response to Open Thread
If it weren't for the unions, manufacturing would have stayed here and not gone to China which would have resulted in a lot less pollution globally.

From the world of PR: the last firm I was with had the Mayfair Hotel in London as a client. It's a celebrity-type upscale hotel that gets off on having famous folks stay there. As part of our campaign we had the GM - a real flamboyant type guy - interview Paris Hilton on her stay at the hotel. We posted the interview on Facebook and of course gots lots of attention for the client.
In truth, she'd NEVER stayed there! She readily agreed to pretend she had stayed a few days and so was coached up on some of the hotel's features an hour before the interview. She then went out and delivered a completely lie-based interview flawlessly. In many ways, she's a real pro.

- Which was your favorite?
- How much money do you have?
- Would you do something outrageous right now?
- Where do rich people like you buy drugs?
- Which ethnicities/races have you had sex with?
- Have you seen peopleofwalmart.com?
Just for starters.

He enjoys making outrageous, provocative and at times idiotic comments and then expressing shock - SHOCK - when people disagree. That's about the only thing that's consistent about him. That said, he seems pretty harmless overall.

What about other advertising that you might receive via email blast. Say you have an insurance policy with a company. If they send you an email about some other product, do you read it? Or toss it?
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 10, 2010 5:36 PM
Well, I tend to toss them, but that's just me. Normally I look for company names/words/phrases I recognize before deciding whether or not I will open the email or just delete. I like to work quickly when on the computer.

Do you ever get email blasts or do you use any mobile apps related to the travel industry? Do you review any travel related products that you might receive ads or promo stuff for? Do you sign up for stuff like that?
Posted by: cobblehiller at March 10, 2010 5:23 PM
I created some Google alerts that forward news stories to my Blackberry whenever key words are mentioned in the story. I don't currently use any travel-related mobile apps, although there are many. I'm also not big on signing up for promotional stuff, but I do try to read everything I receive to see if I can't determine its value.

True. When I feel have nothing to add, I keep my mouth shut. BUT, I did BUY a piece of furniture someone was selling last summer on the Forum!
I wonder how many other OT posters have ever purchased something advertised on Brownstoner?
Incidentally, I'm sure Mr. B's advertisers would also LOVE to know that!

"ENY, tell me how you use Twitter or any hand held apps?"
I don't use it that way CH, but probably will in the near future. I use a Blackberry, from which it's difficult (if not impossible) to post to Twitter. I post from my desktop computer now that I've started by own business.
If I switch to an iPhone or other device (Droid comes to mind), I will be able to post on Twitter from the device. I'm thinking of doing that soon.
My discussion with DH is pretty ironic, because that's exactly how I use Twitter - I post news from the travel industry for other travel industry types who follow my posts, and I read posts from other travel industry types I know have access to good information. It's a news source and a way to learn things quickly.

"ENY, speaking of idiotic comments, i saw your comment earlier in the week accusing my family of owning a slave!
:-/"
I didn't accuse your family of owning a slave. I ASKED if your family owned a slave, based on your description of a nanny who worked for your family but was not paid. Your description of "Cookie" makes the situation much more clear. Sounds like a nice arrangement, actually.
And c'mon Rob, you make an idiotic comment on Brownstoner at least once every day! That's not news. You're not a bad guy overall. Just lazy and unmotivated, like M4L said.
Posted by: East New York at March 10, 2010 5:13 PM in response to Open Thread
Shit - i forgot ENY is a big twitter advocate
yeah - you told us how it can be a useful tool - but that's not how lots of people use it.
Posted by: dirty_hipster at March 10, 2010 4:51 PM
I agree 100% DH. But that's how it CAN be used, and some folks DO use it that way. Just as some folks come to Brownstoner to engage in serious conversations about real estate, while others come to post blow-by-blow details of their sex lives (Dave).
Again, there's nothing wrong with any of that. It just cracks me up to read Twitter put-downs when it's not too much different from any other digital communications technology.
Posted by: East New York at March 10, 2010 5:07 PM in response to Open Thread
I think my friends who do use twitter use it to let everyoen know what they're doing at all times.
like:

boring
Posted by: dirty_hipster at March 10, 2010 4:24 PM
Yes, Twitter is so unlike the Brownstoner Open Thread, where one can learn about cats and Lotus deliveries, read idiotic comments from Rob, and joke about Tibet.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Posted by: Biff Champion at March 10, 2010 2:58 PM
The way you describe it (you screamed on new boss' best friend/flunkie as the boss looked on in shock), you were sending an aggressive, passive-aggressive message that you dislike the boss.
Sounds like that came across. The only question now is what the repercussions will amount to. Becuase it's safe to say there will be a reckoning.

Is it considered a career limiting move to, after getting enraged with a colleague (heretofore knows as "Shithead") over a conference call, to storm into Shithead's office (which is right next to mine) and rip him a new asshole while my new boss (who happens to be Shithead's best friend at work and who got his job because of Shithead) looks on in horror?
