TonyTone: this is my screen name. Even if it weren't, I doubt that you'd take my statements seriously, given that I disagree with your views.

Once and for all, what does having kids have to do with public transportation? Every day, hundreds of thousands of New York parents manage to take care of business without the luxury of a car. My neighbor raised four children and neither she nor her husband have ever had driver's licenses.

It's funny that when discussing development people are quick to decry the "suburbanization" of Brooklyn, but when it comes to the ultimate symbol of suburbania - the automobile - they change their tune. As usual, people are long on lectures, but when it comes to actually sacrificing their personal comforts for the better of the community (i.e. traffic) they become quite individualistic.

I agree with your statement about cars. People love to complain about traffic, but no one is willing to give up his/her own car.

It's tempting to continue weighing in on these Atlantic Yard debates, but at this point the whole thing is tiresome. The public meetings will be a mere formality and the state will surely uphold its findings. Goldstein and Co. will file their lawsuits and, like every other battle they've fought, will lose. After that, this squabbling will finally end and the construction can begin.

I agree. I thought that the column was fair and measured.

Very cogent article by Errol Louis. It's interesting to hear the opinion of an experienced activist. I have long felt that the contest strategies favored by DDDB and others are poor choices for a force as rich and powerful as Ratner. Most people realize that a brick wall won't give no matter how many times you bash your head against it.

I'm confused. The implication appears to be that moving the low-income housing off-site would be a bad thing. On the other hand, most opponents have painted the future AY site as a hellhole: traffic, smog, congestion, density, overcrowded schools, sewage problems, even terrorism. By that logic, wouldn't residents of the low-income housing be better off elsewhere?

Oh, and another thing I forgot...

You know you've gotten the better of an AT opponent when they pull out the old "you must work for Ratner" card.

heh.

Attack that person withour reason? Why is pointing out a glaring inconsistency between belief and behavior an attack or harassment?

Thanks for admitting that your decision boils down to money, CH Proud. No, I wouldn't rent an apt. for $300 a month, because I openly admit that I like to maxmize profits. You, on the other hand, say one thing and do another. Just as you don't appreciate people making assumptions about you (which I never did - I just stated a fact based on information that you volunteered), I'm sure that developers and owners of rent-stabilized buildings don't appreciate people doing the same to them.

Dreadnaught,

Your exact words were "MOST BROOKLYNITES don't want this..." Funny, when you're called upon to provide evidence, you can't do so (because you don't have any) and you then proceed to reword your original statment to better suit your needs.

One asepct of AY opponents that I find amusing is their silly belief that this war will be won with facts and overblown language. Folks, this is entirely about power and we all know which side has more of that.

Most Brooklynites don't want overdevelopment or skyline? Please provide some statistics to verify this claim.

Maybe in areas like Fort Greene or Park Slope this might be true. But in Brownsville, East New York, East Flatbush, Marine Park, Bergen Beach, etc. I doubt that the opposition is that strong. Don't forget that Brooklyn is huge and contains a wide variety of opinions.

What is interesting about this board is how people make use the moniker (or lack therof) as an excuse for evading difficult questions. In the past, those opposed to the Atlantic Yards would forever be criticizing those who posted anonymously - now my statements are being dismissed solely on my selection of a screen name. And if I persist with this question, I will surely be dismissed as a troll.

CrownHeightsProud sneers at the person angered at "subsidizing the little old lady down the hall", but is clearly not willing to do the same herself.

So, in conclusion, I think it's only fair that those who apply rules to others should be willing to live by those rules themselves. Anything else is hypocrisy.

I'm not surprised by your response, CH Proud. As expected, you talk a good game on these boards, but when it comes to sacrificing your own profit margin, you conveniently dodge the issue.

Typical, and it shows where your heart truly lies.

"I think the premise in helping those who need help to pay housing costs in one of the most expensive cities in the world, is an altruistic and noble cause."

Excellent point, CrownHeightsProud. How about putting your money where your mouth is by renting the unit in your brownstone to a poor, single mother for $300 a month? Actions speak louder than words!
