DIY Beginner Project?
I'm going to start some DIY projects around and wanted to start easy. What would you recommend as a starter project?
1) install crown moulding
2) replace (but not move) bathroom fixtures (sink, toilet, medicine cabinet)
3) replace flooring (take out carpet, install either wood or cork flooring)
Thanks for any suggestions!!!

Raccoon in Carroll Gardens
Saw a big angry raccoon last night on Clinton and Degraw. Aside from calling 311, what do people do? He was hissing and seemed aggressive. Would hope that 311 follows up with Animal Control. Anyway, if you walk a dog in that area, be careful.

Flooring for Garden Level
Currently we're using the garden level as a lounge / media room. Due to the slope, it's above grade with sliding doors on one side, and almost completely below grade on the other side. Right now, it feels like a cement floor and is covered with really cheap institutional type carpet. Was wondering on suggestions for replacing the flooring. It is a very high traffic area from outside (muddy grass) in. Was thinking of replacing with a nicer carpet because of comfort factor (also it gets very cold during the winter even with the heat on). Rip up the old stuff, throw down carpet pad and a nice durable but nice carpet? Is this going to be crazy expensive? The space is about 600-700sqft.
Thanks in advance!!!

i'd say get a quote from a handyman for removing the mirror and maybe fixing the wall without gluing on another mirror. as long as the glued on mirror is coming off, why repeat the same headache by doing it again? I think a nice hanging mirror or even installing a flush medicine cabinet might be more attractive. the bigger cost relative to replacing the mirror may be the labor to remove it, depending on how it's glued on and repairing the wall.

i meant $2400 for a freakin 1 bedroom. seriously, that is just obnoxious. that's more than a floorthru in a CG brownstone. although i guess preferences render neighborhoods self selecting. if that makes any sense.

what the frack? $2400 to live in greenpoint? where your only train is the mutha-effin G?
Posted by: CG_ups at November 20, 2009 10:32 AM in response to Viridian Two-Thirds Rented
was there no post today re: the train issues this morning? there was a fatality and another separate incident where someone was hit by a train this morning and is in serious condition but alive (G and F trains respectively). i would have though this would be big news on this blog.

so sad, i remember people had such high hopes for this place when it was being developed / built.
was schnitzel haus on Mr. B's list for a restaurant review of the day? i think bay ridge was an area he was looking to bulk up on in the restaurant directory.

$4 for a currywurst? currency inflation or giant currywurst? i recall them being about $1.50 in germany. mmm good stuff. is nice to have someplace closer than loreley or lederhosen for good german grub. is cafe steinhof german too? i guess carroll gardens is kind of smack in the middle of the two.
not only is it not a 1-br, but from the floorplan and weird angled bird's eye picture, i think this is a sleeping loft. that's like a -1 BR.

Liberty Sunset is nice, it's right by Steve's Key Lime Pies in Red Hook. It's more live plants than plant supplies I think. I got some cute plants there. Mazzone Hardware has a great seasonal gardening shop next to the regular hardware store, but it's more low end stuff. I got some plastic planters there and they also have basic terra cotta planters. They also carry soil but no prettier containers or gardening supplies (like the gloves I must buy for next year's herb crop). I'm guessing since this space is smaller and more "shop-like" that it will be more focused on gardening supplies supplies rather than actual plants. At least I hope. Like simple but pleasant looking functional items (like a water can, gardening gloves, gardening tools) none of which I saw at Liberty or Mazzone. So hopefully it will fill in that gap rather than encroach on the existing businesses.

thanks minard and arkady. i never would have thought of the gloves. another day, another thing learned.

i forget what used to be here, a bodega or a sandwich shop maybe? anyway, it will be nice to have a gardening shop nearby. maybe they can help me with my squirrel problem. squirrels turned my hanging herb garden into a rodent club med hammock.

I had VPI back when I still lived in Manhattan. Maybe my vet was very expensive but I remember still having to pay a lot out of pocket. The allotment for a checkup was less than half of actual cost. And they kind of wanked around about pre-existing conditions and whatnot. So if you have a healthy young dog / puppy, then it may be worth it otherwise find a good but reasonably priced vet (that's what we ended up doing and we love our vet). Also, it probably won't go into effect until the dog has a full checkup (partly so that they can verify pre-existing condition, general healthy etc).

mazzola is awesome. naidre's blows.
this block is ok. it's not as bad as it's proximity to the BQE entrance would imply. on the downside, it's right next to a giant school. and not cute little munchkins either. full on YOOTS (youths). henry street is awesome though. quiet but not as overwhelmingly residential as clinton street. there are a couple of good restaurants (lucali's, koto), a GREAT bakery (mazzola's) and a couple of bodega's which are handy for last minute lotto ticket purchasing before a big jackpot. and dry cleaners / laundromats. the grosser blocks are down by luquer right off the BQE. dog poo smooshed into the sidewalks and a bit more gritty than here.

ps. it's a lot cheaper to have the locksmith install the lock during their regular business hours versus this weekend, if that's possible. it cuts the cost by almost half (like over $200 versus about $100).
Posted by: CG_ups at November 13, 2009 9:56 AM in response to Door lock Suggestions
from the allstate insurance webpage
We recommend Grade 1 (ANSI designation) deadbolt type locks on:
Exterior doors
Doors between attached garages and living spaces
Garage man doors (even if the garage is not attached to the house.)
i like deadbolt locks. if they aren't already there, i put them in at every apartment that i've lived in. they are secure. you can get them at home depot or lowe's. as long as they meet the above designation, brand should be somewhat irrelevant. hope this helps!

tough crowd! just because they have an ugly sign, people are wishing death on the biz? the area isn't really frat boy central, so i doubt the BRO-tastic vibe is going to be happening. most sports bars outside of murray hill and tutrle bay aren't too bad. cheap beer, good bar eats. it's not such a bad thing. i'm just glad that the wine-bar-on-every corner trend finally seems to have died, though unfortunate that it had to be because of the current economic environment.

i had a minor taxi accident and had to report it. i received a notice for a court date about a month later. definitely call the TLC and give them as many details as possible. very helpful that you have the medallion number.
sorry to hear about the accident, that is scary stuff. hopefully everyone is ok. if you call the TLC and report it, you should be able to get somewhere. probably wouldn't hurt to call the local police precinct as well.

this morning i saw big brown paper bags (like bigger than 30 gallon trash bags) that were marked "city leaf pickup" or something like that. so either someone saved the bags from last year, or there is some type of program going on. i don't know the details though. sorry.

But the right measure of reimbursement is repair/replace costs, like for like. What PV does with the money is his/her own business.
Unfortunately, a new caesarstone top, fabricated and installed, could easily run $350-500, plus possible costs to reattach the sink to the plumbing. The problem is that the top you have can't be modified to make the opening smaller. But it sounds like you aren't going to bother with a new one. Partial payment sounds right here, particularly since it is being offered. It can also be a gentle bargaining chip as you work out whatever other items there are on the list. You are right not to escalate over these small details.

Yes, is there any way to install a recessed medicine cabinet instead. They are far more convenient and this sink base has very little storage for all the toiletries, medicines, etc. But I gues it's a second bath anyway.

I used a glassier in greenpoint on mahnattan ave near eagle.
My huge mirror (glued to the wall) was only $300 total.
They did an awesome job.
If the old mirror comes off easily, it should be an easy fix.

I would take the $250. You could pull the mirror off, take it to a glass shop and have them cut off the bottom inch, polish the edge and then glue it back. Most likely 4 globs of mirror mastic hold the whole thing on.
Or get the glass guy who comes to do the bath/shower.
I would say, "By the way, Mr. Glass guy, you wouldn't be able to take this back to your shop and make the repair, would you?" After he gives you the quote for the glass panel of coarse.

a-don't see problem with shower curtain, it's on the inside of the shower (normally except when you have teenage boys)
b-more annoyingly, how do you turn on the shower to let it get warm without an unpleasant reach over? That is a weird placement.
