gastropubs. smart cars. zipcar. more cops to protect the gentrifiers. coffeeshops. health food stores. people complaining about lack of bike lanes and loud church music.

Option 4: Pratt does something like what they do for gym membership (I'm not a Pratt kid but used to work out in their gym), and create some sort of ID system for community members to use if they want to access the campus. Perhaps Leticia James or another elected official could fund some sort of program like this with their discretionary member item funds. It would allow members of the community access to the beautiful grounds, allay security concerns, and somewhat restrict access.

An in-law in Long Island finished his basement and got a new bathroom installed and said that the contracter lowered his price a lot, and was talking about not having much work. So I assumed that was the case.

I think the What's arguments as relates to gentrification as very cogent. That some people don't agree with his points don't make the arguments less valid, as much as some would like to think. Quibbling about typos is pretty ridiculous.

Not all of the people complaining are immigrants (I, for example, am Latino, but not an immigrant.) Not that it should make any difference whatsoever.

I've had realtors get snippy at me for referencing Streeteasy and Propertyshark. In my experience at a few open houses and email exchanges, almost every single broker has not appreciated that I peruse these sites obsessively. I think that most brokers would prefer a return to the dark ages when we didn't have such easy access to comps, sale prices, and online communities like Brownstoner and other blogs to learn more about the market.

BrooklynZoo wrote a review about Kellogg's Diner on June 3, 2009 12:40 PM

Ugh. I hate this place with all of my soul. Or, I hate what it has become. I grew up eating here after church on many Sunday mornings, when it had diner prices, friendly waitresses and good, fast service. The prices have been higher than what a diner should be for years, and the service was horrid on my two visits there since the makeover. Almost an hour to get fries and a milkshake - I sh*t you not. Kellogs, we had some good times together, and I have so many fond memories of eating here with my family. You've sold your soul to the new Gods of Billyburg, and you are dead to me.

Yes this doesn't seem to actually affect Brooklyn riders. It just makes permanent the existing service cuts that made Court Sq. the last stop for at least the last few years.

I'm confused - hasn't the G only gone to Court Sq for a while now? I'm not sure how much of a service ct that really is.

I mean.. its ugly and the DOB violations are scary. SO maybe not THIS building. I just meant that I'd love to be able to live right on the block where I grew up, where I have fam, etc. Before people start jumping on me for wanting tio live in a fugly building with multiple violations.

Well, if the one person living in a studio finds a husband/wife/partner/friend/kept man, then they can afford double. While the prospect of affording 3 or 4 or 5 kids right now sounds daunting - there are absolutely affordable 1 and 2 bedroom apartments in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Kensington, Jackson heights, Sunnyside, Woodside, etc. Now, if you want an affordable 1500 sq. ft. apartment in Park Slope or Fort Greene or Carroll Gardens, good luck. But what people sometimes say on these boards is true - if you are willing to make certain sacrifices, more people can find places that are affordable to them if they really look and have an open mind.

And I personally could not care less if people who want to move to New York cannot afford to do so. As a native New Yorker (gasp!), I have much more sympathy for native New Yorkers who cannot afford to live in their own neighborhoods anymore.

I live in a 195 Willoughby Studio. It's not full of architectural detail or anything, but the common areas, including the mail room, have all been recently renovated. A lot of old-timers with families sprinkled in.

I'm happy because I'm hoping to sell my place, and somewhere in the realm of $225,000 would be just fine with me.

I went there once, waited about 45 mins before leaving. Nobody came and took our order! Inexcusable. They are dead to me.

"its a all cash deal tho."

Um, that is a pretty big BUT in your little comparable. All of those cash sales are deeply discounted like that... because who has 165K lying around? There are a lot of coops that don't allow mortgages in Sunset Park, and they are all priced way below market rate for that reason.

I have a studio in Clinton Hill and thought for a split second about looking into this place as a much cheaper, possibly all cash deal.... but nah. The apartment looks very nice, but small. Great kitchen for a studio.

Posted by: BrooklynZoo at January 4, 2008 1:47 PM in response to Co-op of the Day: 80 Winthrop Street

I live two blocks away, and have lived here for a little over 2 years. The walk to the C is absolutely 100% safe, along blocks lined with beautiful homes and trees. The walk to the Classon G stop is not as pretty, but still fine.

Another alternative is the B54 Bus that runs along Myrtle and drops you off by Metro-Tech.

The distance should kill it, not the safety. That stretch of Myrtle has changed a lot with all the new restaurants.

12:02, and others... with any apartment/house, you should visit the area first to get a sense. People on these boards will not be very helpful, because some people never feel safe in New York, and there are others who feel sale and comfortable in more nabes.

Posted by: BrooklynZoo at January 4, 2008 12:20 PM in response to Sales Watch: Slow Going at The Azure

It is .375 miles from the Classon G (doable) and exactly a mile from the Clinton-Washington C stop (a trek).

The building is absolutely horrid, especially at those prices.

I may be putting words into Barron's mouth, but what I understood of his statement is that instead of focusing on policing (and, proliferation of prisons, higher minimum sentences, etc.), perhaps we should be focusing more on educational programs, job training, etc. - things that are proven to reduce crime in a longer, more impactful way. It's a question of spending more money on the front end (prevention through education and opportunity) or the back end.

I agree that NYPD seems to becoming more diverse - the most recent class of recruits were 27% Hispanic, 13% black, 7% Asian and 53% white. Those numbers aren't that far off from NYC population statistics, I think.. That's definitely a step in the right direction.

Posted by: BrooklynZoo at December 28, 2007 12:43 PM in response to City Assigning Newbie Cops to Crime-Ridden Areas

Stamford is 40 mins from Grand Central, but you have to pay for a lovely Metro North ticket to get to NYC, twice a day, every day, if you work here. That brings your cost of living way way up. No subways to Westchester either. So its tough to compare Westchester/Stamford to Bayridge based solely on travel time.

Been shopping there since I was a kid (A&S days), and I hope Fulton doesn't change at all. People who are complaining about dirty streets - um... shouldn't the city be doing a better job of cleaning them then?

Just because you don't like the clothes or the feel of the place, the fact is that for many Brooklyn residents, Fulton is where you go to clothes shop. It is packed, merchants make a lot of money. It's clearly successful, and clearly fills a niche for many people. Why change it? Because a handful of people want boring chain stores that you can find in any-mall USA?

A strip of Pottery Barns, BBBYs, Banana Republics... .

The whole notion that this will lead to frivolous lawsuits by tenants is insanely ridiculous. Something like 95% of all housing court cases are brought forth by landlords. According the the recent Village Voice article, over 90% of all tenants attend these cases without any legal representation, and "for landlords, the ratio is the exact reverse." Simply put, very few tenants have access to the kinds of resources it takes to legally challenge landlords. While there are many small-time landlords, NYC is increasingly turning into a town of buildings owned by deep-pocketed companies and corporations looking to make a buck, regardless of the human cost.

And, Bill 638 (the separate, pro-landlord, legislation proposed by Baez and another Bronx politician, I think) is dead. Was struck down last week due to intense backlash. See http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/bronx/2007/12/12/2007-12-12_city_council_kills_prolandlord_bill.html.

Who said anything about forcing anyone to use the site??!?!?

A few people are saying that they are curious about statistics of the racial and ethnic makeup of site visitors. Why is that such a crazy thing?!

Posted by: BrooklynZoo at November 23, 2007 1:14 PM in response to Brownstoner Reader Survey Results

11:20, I agree. I've mentioned that in my survey the past two times...

11:41, what do you mean by PS2? If you mean what I think you mean, then that's super offensive, and you are a bigot and an a$$.

Look at the neighborhoods represented - some of them (Bed Stuy, Clinton Hill, Fort Greene) have huge populations of people of color, many of whom are college educated and middle class (like me, although I do fall way short of the average Brownstoner salary). I don't know that anything is keeping people of color from more frequently accessing this site, so I am not blaming anyone for this one-sided demographic. I would just be curious to see those numbers and am disappointed that Brownstoner isn't as interested in that as me, ans 11:20, and probably a few other people, that's all.

Don't jump on people for asking questions and being curious.

P.S. What would be so horrible about cyberspace being racially balanced?! In this day of $300 computers, it isn't such a crazy goal, is it?
