Brown Garbage Cans Do Not Exist!!!
Help. I'm trying to find brown or dark brown garbage cans with matching lids for the front of my brownstone. They will look so much better than grey or metal. I am just blown away that I cannot seem to find this anywhere! Not Lowes, not Home Depot...not even after searching for hours and hours on line. This is madness.

House Leak - How Can I Trace It???
I've had a slow leak into my living room ceiling for many weeks now. I cut open the ceiling to see that it was near my walk in shower. However, now it appears to be dripping and the shower hasn't been used for 2 days. So...I'm thinking its central AC condensation perhaps? I've already cut holes in my ceiling and in a couple of walls on the second floor around the bathroom. Is there any better way to try to trace to the source of this leak. It's making me ----ing insane! Any thoughts?
Tiler for Bathroom Needed
I have read back in the archives but can't find many useful recs for a really good bathroom tiler. Any suggestions. This is a big walk in shower with high end plumbing and finishes. Also trying to find source of some leaking that may be behind walls or under shower floor, so need someone who will take the time to figure this out. Any suggestions? Thanks

Floating Flooring - Anyone Have It?
We are considering floating flooring for various reasons that I need not get into. I'm wondering if anyone has tried this and what you think of it. Does it feel solid? Does it creak to walk on? Is it durable? Any major negatives or positives? Thanks!

Garden Design Help
We are trying to find garden design help for our Carroll Gardens house. Does anyone have any recommendations? We are looking for plantings, some paver or blue stone areas, cover for the cinder block walls, minor lighting using already existing electrical and some type of water feature. Any advice or referrals would be much appreciated. Thanks

I swear I'm serious. I obsess over this stuff. This one is an okay color, but really looking for more brown than mocha. Also, this is a bit too tall. You see those shorter round garbage cans with no wheels and that's what I really would like. Just a medium size, round, brown can with a brown lid. I swear you'd think you'd find in a a minute on line, but it really does not seem to exist. IT's bizarre!!! Thanks for the help though

Yes, I'm with Combustiblegirl2. Right next to the Ikea at the old run down revere plant. It's on the water and has a ton of human traffic with money to spend due to Ikea and Fairway on either side of the area. It's truly an amazing spot.

Good feed back and I do appreciate the views others have posted here. To IKnow - i like the idea and may try it...very clever. To Nokilissa - I do try to invest my energy elsewhere! I really do work 60+ hours a week at a law firm, I try cases to verdict every month, I am a father, I do a lot of pro bono work for battered women and even a little for a cat shelter believe it or not. With so little time left in my days, you can see how important this issue is to me if I still manage to make it such a battle.
I suppose there is no good answer here and I understand these guys are just the earning a buck, but the line must be drawn somewhere. Going to the top has little to no effect, so I'm starting at the bottom and hoping enough abuse will lead to complacency and reluctance to deliver...then perhaps this will rise up through the ranks and eventually get to the top. Perhaps this is just a dream, but it's the best i've got right now. Still, i give credit to the local politicians willing to spend the time and energy to at least attempt to address this issue. Bravo.

Sorry to ramble but I forgot to mention a couple of my creative techniques for dealing with this problem. Last year I collected a truckload of Kohl's papers; truly a small truck load. I then dropped them all right at the front door of the building housing Kohl's advertising unit. It was fun.
I've waiting for the guy to come by and accidentally sprayed him with my house - about 17 times in the last year. This has proven much more effective than any sign.
I have a video system so I caught one guy trying to pull of my sign for no flyers. We ID'd him and he was charged with a misdemeanor which killed his illegal status. Oh well.
I've waited and the second the guy throws his paper in, I wing last weeks paper right at him as hard as I can. I'm very accurate.
I've dropped eggs on the guys from my roof; water balloons, latex paint, and all sorts of things. The beauty of it all is that I'm a lawyer who works 60 hours/week yet I still find time for this stuff. yes, you're all probably saying what I'm thinking. I'll miss these guys if they ever leave me won't I?

As a brownstone owner in Carroll Gardens I must comment. It's easy to say, "no big deal, just pick them up...there are plenty of more important things in the world", but if a homeowner takes this approach, he or she might as well roll over, let the property fall to crap, roll up in the fetal position and ask these annoying paper delivery guys to pardon him/her for being in their way. What the F__K?! Sure we can ignore it as we can ignore lots of things in life, but there is nothing wrong with finding this intrusive and annoying as hell. These guys leave 4-5 things littering my stoop a few times every week. Kohl's is the worst! I've asked them nicely to stop. I've even offered to pay the guys to stop which works until some new guy picks up the route. I'm a nice guy! But this is my property. I own it. They are now breaking the law. It's great. I'm tired of waiting up late through the night and into the early morning just to spring upon these guys with boiling water. Hell, I'm just throwing hot water onto a public sidewalk. Their throwing slippery plastic onto private property. My elderly tenant slipped and broke her hip last her on one of these things. Three months later she died from complication related to the surgery. But, sure, we can admire these guys and the companies they work for if we want to. WHY? What is wrong with some of you people. If someone vents about this, you defend it. If someone complains about a loud neighbor you say it's just the city and to move. If someone complains about anything they have every right to complain about, some of you rail against them. Tonight I rail against you because you are either just uninformed, a weak, weak human being, or you're just trying to get a rise. If it's the latter - fine - you got me. If it's the former - well, then you'll never get any wiser. If it's that you're just weak which is my guess, then pleas grow some balls because that's what living in New York City is all about.

Thanks so much for the feedback. I see to be faced with quite a dilemma. I will admit first, at the risk of being bashed on this site, that we are covering very expensive marble. We don't like the look at all so despite the haters, this is my reason to cover it. I've had 2 pros tell me that the house is too high quality to throw floating floors over the marble and with all the special cuts we'd need it's just not worth it. One guy said he would refuse the job if i wanted floating flooring. They both said the proper thing is to take up the marble and do it right, but this would mean a 2-3 week job because although only 500 sf, the marble was laid well and it will be a massive prep and demo job. Two other floor guys said they'd lay floating over the whole floor and it would be fine! I'm really at a loss here!

Great to see this post. I have a similar but bigger situation. Our entire parlor floor is marble and expensive marble at that. However, it looks hideous and we want wood flooring. To rip the marble out would be a massive undertaking requiring jackhammers and would really trash our house. We are looking into whether or not it's possible to lay wood over the marble as well. I'm waiting to hear back from a few installers so will let you know what we hear. If anyone else has insight to offer, that would be appreciated.

No - the answers are not sufficient. Gowanus never returns calls so they are of no help. Other than Dig which I'm contacting there is no other good suggestion. Thus I must continue posting. Thanks for the tip.

For better or worse, I have plenty more to swear about than trash can design.
You need to search the industrial suppliers (and you need to be prepared to pay commercial prices):

It's funny that you mention brown garbage cans... I actually went through the same thing myself a few weeks ago. What I did was purchased the green ones, than primed and painted the indented sections brown (the same color as my stoop. I must say that they came out very well.

The Rubermade Kona color such as
http://doitbest.com/Main.aspx?PageID=64&SKU=604100&utm_source=Froogle&utm_medium=FREECSE&utm_term
is available from time to time all over the city. It seems that the colors rotate over the years.
A couple of years ago all I could find in this model was the light blue. I wanted a green one for the recycling. I spent a summer looking. Finally at the end of the summer I spotted them across Montauk highway in Suffolk County.
The following summer the hardware store on the corner stocked the Green one. I've seen the same with the brown.
I tried one of the industrial supply companies located in Brooklyn and they wanted to tack on a huge delivery fee for common carrier due to the size - no pickup was allowed.
Good luck - I know the frustration. Guess you just need to pick up extras when you see them.

Ever heard of spray paint? Buy a metal can, sand it a little... and paint it any beautiful color you'd like. Why not hot pink. Can't find those at lowes either... but you can get hot pink paint.
Or maybe I'm missing something more complicated.

Thanks for the help people. The first one vinca posted is perfect just don't want the wheels. Seeing if it's simple to just get without or take them off. Yes, this is a life quest. I would never spray paint my metal cans; that would defy my sense of of something. It's complicated - I'm a bit neurotic. Thanks

BrooklynWilly: It's kind of painful for me to read your posts. You might have some luck by contacting Rubbermaid's commercial division. Also by searching through Food Service vendors. Here are a few more links, including an outlet in Bushwick that might have something on-site, or where you can order by catalog:

I found my brown garbage cans with wheels at Pintchik - about a year ago. And they were on sale for 13 bucks each.

You know what looks really awesome? When people build wood boxes with lids to enclose their garbage cans. Convenient, too, because the passerby cannot drop their trash in it.

If spray painting defies your sense of something... you could use some therapy... but other than that... you can buy a plain metal can and have it industrial powder coated. Of course, that would costs 5 times the price of the can.... but you can get any color you want.
