Bed Bugs

I moved into a apt in Mid May. Late June I discovered we had the bedbugs. The mgmt sent the exterminator- 5x later they are still here. Spoke with the blg mngr, he told me they had another apt I could move into that was clear of them. said OK. now they are renegging on it. Clothes were laundered and are in bags. been sleeping on an airmattress since june. Can I take them to court? What are my rights?

I had the same situation and before this becomes a headache, nightmare, etc. take the necessary measures of ensuring that the apt has been thoroughly exterminated. Ask the LL for a receipt from the exterminator that it was exterminated. Obviously they have to pay someone to do it so they should have an invoice. make sure its detailed and get the number of the exterminator from the invoice and call them yourself to make sure they did your apt. When you move in, make sure you check thoroughly. At night take a flashlight and business card or credit card and scrape the floor boards to pull out any BB's that are hiding there. Alcohol can only kill BB's on the spot, its not a lasting solution. trust me when I tell u to confirm everything because BB's are a life altering situation. regular cleanings or even roach spray does not kill them. A professinal has special chemicals that kill.

You should actually contact the Landmarks Conservancy at 212.995.5260. LPC does not give our recommendations for contractors or other vendors because they are a city agency.

Yes, it's true that LPC cannot make specific contractor recommendations. But, if you take the time to ask, they can sometimes help point you towards available resources that aid in understanding the nature of your repair. I find the Conservancy's contractor lists, though readily available, rather limited (and sometimes even self-serving).

speak to a company that does latex casts of the original and composite (ie "fiberglass") replicas. That is the best way to get authentic reproductions of repeating decorative elements such as brackets or modillions or lion's heads etc. They are also light weight and monolithic which is a plus. There are plenty of those companies in the metro area, at least one in LIC. google fiberglass architectural elements.

The landmarks commission does not recommend but I asked whose work they approved in the past and the guy read me a list of contractors.

Agree that contacting Artistic wood crafts - Omar -- is a good road to go down. They have done lots of work for me and are real craftsmen. Not this, but have seen a Cornish in their shop that was amazing.

Omar and Bella of artisticwoodcrafts are great at this type of thing. Just be sure to have it made of a durable wood (not poplar, as it is prone to fungal growth).
