Repairs for Tall Front Doors

I need some recommendations for aprofessional who can repair my large front double doors. They are the (original?) tall ones with long glass panels. They are very badly damaged around the lock area, have visible gaps on the bottom, and are fairy gucked up with paint. Cost is a consideration.

OP here: I had a guy who restores furniture and doors come in and look at the situation and he told me he typically charges about $3000-4000 to strip the doors down to their original glory and repair/recreate as needed. He walked me around the neighborhood (Stuy Heights) to show me some of the other doors he's done over the years vs. the crap quick paint jobs others do. I believe he'll do a good job but with a price that high I may have to leave this project for later (I'm just finishing up a gut renovation so funds are tight). I may just leave my ugly gate up or get someone to do the very minimum on the double doors just to get them working again :(

You should try Big Prototype, a small Red Hook architecture firm run by two Yale Architecture grads. Their rates are reasonable and their taste runs modern. They just redesigned and helped manage the renovations of an entire 3 story brownstone for me. I was very pleased with the results.

I forgot to mention that Big Prototype is very eco-conscious--they used recycled materials in one of my kitchens.

I just rebuilt my staircase and put back in the old railing and banister but I'm missing a few spindles. I can pick up tonight. Call me at 617 817 3052.

$3000-$4000 is a rip off. another few hundred dollars and you're in the ball park for brand new doors.

Oh man, 7:27 you caught me! So why don't you post the company who did your job so cheap?

I haven't worked with them (although I know Perla and she's great) but look through their portfolio - they have an amazing aesthetic and some really creative ideas for brownstones.

Try Dubravka Antic at 917-304-2288. We are in the last phase of our brownstone gut reno. It is definitely a modern interpretation of a brownstone. We have been very happy with her work.

Clarification: you must take the whole kit-and-kaboddle. Unless some folks want to tag-team and take different parts, I do not have the time (or inclination) to divvy up the goods into parts.

Hope that helps.

And PLEASE read the post! 3 folks have inquired so far (great), but I will not know the pick-up date (which might be during the day) for at least a week, possibly two.

Thanks.

Actually the pick up will MOST LIKELY be during the day, 8am-3pm, but I will clarify when I see the contractor.

Had emailed- I would be willing to pick the whole thing up. I will use most but not all of it, and would be happy to share some of the spindles with the poster above. I'm in the NY area, and can pick up on short notice.

What are you doing to that poor old house that you can't reuse the spindles, banister and newells? We had new oak treads and risers put in and the whole thing reset and we managed to keep the spindles (probably walnut as you say), banister (mahogany) and newells (lord knows what they are made of). Glad you are trying to avoid wasting it, though.
