The Union League Club-House

This is a 1891 photo of The Union League Club-House on Bedford Ave. in Crown Heights Grant Square. With all the talk of the Montauk Club apartment today I thought it would be interesting to see what people thought about this building. You see the similarities in architecture but this building looks even more upscale and larger. I really hope that someone could bring this great building back to its glory days. When I pass this area I try to imagine how it was 100 years ago. Do you think we will ever see this building have its renaissance.

Bed-Stuy Landmark Name Change

House for sale/let in the Bedford Section. Brand new three story plus
basement in Stuyvesant Heights. These are the ads that you would see
120 years ago in the Brooklyn news papers. I was looking at an old map
of the Bedford Stuyvesant area and the neighborhood was split up into
areas such as Tompkins Park (or East Brooklyn), Bedford Corners (or
Hancock Heights) and Stuyvesant Heights. When many outsiders hear the name Bed-Stuy the first thing that comes to mind is someplace negative. It is true that in the 1980s and early 1990s it was a time when the area was full of crime and drugs. Bed-Stuy is a rather
new name that started in middle of the last century. Could a name
change be good for the neighborhood? As many of you know Bedford Stuyvesant is in the process of landmarking different sections of the neighborhood such as Bedford Corners Historic District, Agate and Alice Ct Historic District, Ocean Hill Historic District and extending Stuyvesant Heights Historic District. Do you think a name change is what it
takes to draw higher end businesses into the area? Right now we are starting all over again with landmarking. It was started in the mid 80s but someone dropped the ball.
What do you think about the breaking up of the area and going back to the Victorian names?

I really love this style of Architecture... I really wish we had the Clarence W. Seamans Mansion with us today.

Lovely house but the price is a bit off the charts.... I always wanted to see what the interior of this home looks like... New York Ave has some really nice houses.

I think that Crown Heights would be the best bet... You have low competition and a area with a rather large population...

I am also glad to see this come.. Tompkins is such a great street for retail... Now a few restaurants would be nice.. I have heard talk of one coming soon

The sad part about looking at these photos are non of the homes here are landmarked... I hope Bedford Corners gets landmarked soon!

You know how I feel about this one... MM was well a head of his time.. I would love to see what work he did that was never built.. Most architects have tons of work that never came to...

Yes this is a great article. I love when the education of brownstones get out there... I love the Italianate brownstones that you find closer to downtown Brooklyn... Great job MM

Dave I want to get with you, your area is already calendered the only thing we need is for community support... The hard part is done with your area. I know a few blocks around you are very much in favor of this. We do need to get together soon along with BedstuyMaven.

Bedford Corners is long overdue as well as Stuyvesant Heights East, North and expanded districts. I think Bedford Corners will have no problems that part of the neighborhood is all for it....

When I found this out I was so happy for Crown Heights North. You guys are really moving forward. When I walk to and from the park I always go by the New York Ave corridor it is such a beautiful street full of interesting architecture Bedford Corners really entire Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood also got no love in 1976.

The house looks great beautiful woodwork.. The price is so far above me that I can't comment on that.

Posted by: Amzi Hill at September 30, 2009 1:35 PM in response to House of the Day: 233 Garfield Place

You would think that the city of New York historical society would try to buy this house. Or this house would be a great meeting house for Crown Heights. I hate to see such an old house sit here in the shape it is in... I would love to see the interior of this house.... Great job Montrose.

Posted by: Amzi Hill at September 29, 2009 12:10 PM in response to Walkabout with Montrose: A Crown Heights Tale

Boerumresident I think the house might have had forced air heating. This house looks like a Amzi Hill house where he is known to have used forced air.. many of his houses still use this method of heating...

I am happy to see that this "Stuyvesant Heights" house having so much buzz... The price is a bit more in reach for most people... This house should not stay on the market long. The price should go for something near the Average Reader Appraisal in the low 700s

Posted by: Amzi Hill at September 24, 2009 5:17 PM in response to House of the Day: 786 Putnam Avenue

yeah the green stuff is not on the google image... all that said this is going to be a great house for someone...

green steps = algae... I just washed mine off today...

Walking down Stuyvesant is a pretty nice walk to the A/C. Those are pretty short blocks. It is kinda the same as walking down 8th to the. really grand homes on both sides... I hope you all make it out to the Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant house tours next month...

Posted by: Amzi Hill at September 24, 2009 2:40 PM in response to House of the Day: 786 Putnam Avenue

This house in not in the Stuyvesant Heights Landmark District but it is in Stuyvesant Heights. I think this house should go for in the high 600s there are other homes on that block that look the same and have an extra floor that is cheaper. This is a great block and it will be landmarked we hope soon. The Bedford Stuyvesant landmark committee has photographed this block and has submitted the package to Landmarks. This block will be part of the Stuyvesant North Historic District. This is truly one of the nicest blocks in brownstone Brooklyn you really feel the turn of the century as you walk down it....

Posted by: Amzi Hill at September 24, 2009 1:52 PM in response to House of the Day: 786 Putnam Avenue

I know this house well I have walked passed it many times and it looks to be a nice but the only problem is AY is right next door...

I really hate this.. I use to live on this block and I believe these people are somewhat new to the block. This is really really bad I am so disappointed.

yeah that is a bit crazy thing to say when there are houses all over Brooklyn that are back to 2001 prices.

Guys please check out this 1897 clipping from the Brooklyn Eagle... The name Stuyvesant Heights has been around longer than the name Bed-Stuy which came about in the 1950s. Bedford-Stuyvesant was two different neighborhood pre WWII Brooklyn Union gas merged the names in the late 1930s and it stuck. If there is a Greenwood Heights now which I am sure no one in Manhattan has heard of also.. To tell you you the truth when I use to talk about Prospect Hts to people in the city only 4 years ago most have never heard of that either... Technically both of the Bedford Stuyvesant homes are in Stuyvesant Heights.

Hey MacD we need all the positive publicity we can get... good for Bedford Stuyvesant.

Posted by: Amzi Hill at August 6, 2009 9:31 AM in response to Closing Bell: Greenest Block in Brooklyn

Barnes and Noble on Fulton would be great.. The neighborhood needs to invest on Fulton Street. there are blocks that are pretty much empty maybe a nail or hair salon here or there...

Posted by: Amzi Hill at July 30, 2009 4:00 PM in response to What Does Bed Stuy Need?

I would be nice for a Barnes and Noble to come or the Vermont Teddy Bear company open a office in Bedford Stuyvesant. Since Bedford Stuyvesant is the home of the Teddy Bear. or even a big company like Footlocker which is part of the old Woolworth open a corporate office here. We could use a college here. St. Johns should come back. NYU is always looking for land or LIU. All the Fedders buildings in Central and Northern Bed-Stuy could make way for cool College buildings.. lets light get light rail going also...

Posted by: Amzi Hill at July 30, 2009 1:41 PM in response to What Does Bed Stuy Need?

What Bedford Stuyvesant needs are more people that live in the area that own businesses.. We need more restaurants, lounges, specialty shops. I would love to see someone like Magic Johnson re-open the old Regal/ Slave theater up it truly is a shame that the biggest neighborhood in Brooklyn has no movie theater. More young people that invest in the neighborhood. More money from the city to help with our commercial corridors... tree planting. Fulton streets really just need help all together.

Posted by: Amzi Hill at July 30, 2009 1:12 PM in response to What Does Bed Stuy Need?

Bedford Stuyvesant I think is rare today because like rh says kids do play on the sidewalks which you really don't see anymore in NYC brownstones neighborhoods.
