HELP! Need contractor refs!

I wrote about this before but am getting quite desperate so thought I would repost...

Our 4 story building in Carroll Gardens is looking to renovate our common hallway - we need to replace the carpet and change the wall paper, paint the ceiling, the apartment doors (with black enamel paint), sand and poly the handrails, etc...does anyone have contractors they would recommend for such a job? We could look at two different contractors but would prefer one if possible.

Many thanks for your input!

Antique primitive folk bent twig

This is a circa 1920's antique TWIG PLANT STAND -- ornate with patterned leather top, a top/bottom shelf, trig and bark ornamentation and completely stable!
The stand measures 31 1/2" high, and the top square is 13 1/2" x 13 1/2" deep, with a patterned leather top. ALL the twig decoration (around the top, and the base pieces including the 'looped' pieces all around the legs and bottom shelf) are original and none have been replaced --and there is a lower shelf (with the opening in the back of triangular frame) so you can put plants on either the top or the bottom or both. It's an incredible authentic antique piece. If you are a FOLK ART or PRIMITIVES collector -- it's a great accent piece for your collection. While it probably was intended for a plant stand -- there is no reason you can't use it as a side table! It's actual value is over $200, but I am just looking to get rid of it so offering it for a great price $110
Cash and Carry 4th Floor walk up. Happy send more pictures if you would like email me at alexuma at gmail dot com.
Thanks for looking!

I say this whenever the mention of BedBugs come up - if you want to get make sure your house stays Bed Bug free get your home a few House Centipedes. House centipedes feed on spiders, bedbugs, termites, cockroaches, silverfish, ants and other household arthropods. Many homes have them - they are very very fast and creep out of cracks in the walls and floors. If you see them, turn a blind eye for a second, they will be gone before you know it...but whatever you do, DON'T KILL THEM! They are your friends. Ever since I heard this I just smile when I see them knowing they are helping me out...

Ironically, I had TSC insuring my Carroll Gardens Co-op for 3 years before they announced they were dropping me due to my proximity to the water. I was happy with TSC (have them for my car insurance too) but ended up having to move to Allstate for Homeowners insurance.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm going to check with some insurance brokers. All this talk about a hurricane and flooding is getting me very worried. I never used a broker before. If I don't like the quotes that the broker gives me, can I go thru TSC directly? are you in any way obligated to use the broker after getting quotes thru one? TSC gave me a very good quote, but i'm worried about what crownheights2007.

I was initially accepted by TSC, after been dropped by Allstate like others above, but they came back within the first month and said they would have to increase my premium by 50 percent because they insisted my house was a three-family, even though it is a two-family house (I even had documentation from the city government to that effect, but they weren't interested). So be prepared for the possibility that they will jack up your premium substantially once you're feeling secure -- my broker told me they've been doing that to a lot of people lately. I didn't like their attitude, so I've gone elsewhere.

As several other people mentioned, many companies have dropped out of coastal areas (including Allstate & State Farm). The companies are waiting for NY to be hit with a huge storm. I am an independent insurance agent located in Brooklyn. We have many clients within 1 mile of the coastline and have several companies willing to insure coastal regions (including Bay Ridge, DUMBO, and even beachfront in the Hamptons). Insurers are willing to do business in these areas- you just need to know which ones! Feel free to contact me...even if it's just for advice.

This is UNBELIEVABLE! I decided to try to insure my house with TSC b/c the quote was so low. So, I call them back to start my application and they tell me that they can't insure my house b/c it's less than 1000 ft from the water! Why would you give me a quote if you can't insure the place?!?!

after months of using a professional exterminator, someone I know finally used a product like Results and her bedbugs are finally gone. Results contains diatomaceous earth (silica dioxide) which is non-toxic. It does not poison the bedbugs. Instead, it causes their exoskeletons to break down (I think it takes about a week). Results also contains a poison which works much faster. If you are worried about children or pets, you might want to use straight diatomaceous earth. The only danger is if you breathe too much of it in -- it's a fine powder. You have to place it in all the cracks of your floorboards, baseboards, electrical outlets, etc. wherever the bedbugs might be hiding. You should place it around the bed posts, if that is how the bugs crawl into your bed. Once they come into contact with the powder, it will kill them.

I recommend Liberty Pest Control... Speak to Juan or Greg. They have handled an 8 Family bldg in Park Slope for me and have done a superb job, make sure they send you Dominick, he seems to be the best of the exterminators working for them. The Fogging and spreading of what they call "The Dust" into the walls every few feet did the trick...

We went thru 5 other exterminators over 2 years before liberty fixed the issue...

oneasternparkway --
Have the bedbugs been entirely eradicated from your building? I can see that you have had a great deal of personal experience with this.

Just as a follow up. I'm having Killer Queen come on Saturday to check the place. I searched my bed yesterday and couch, and all nearby furniture and nothing. The bed is spotless as is the couch. Asked the babysitter and she scoured her apartment last night and found nothing. Killer Queen mentioned it might be the cleaning person, which seems the most likely culprit as she goes into different houses each day (and the bug appeared the day after she cleaned). I'll keep you posted as to what he finds. (Crossing my fingers)
