Air Quality using Forced-air Heating
I purchased a brownstone with a forced-air heating unit 4 years ago. The unit was blowing dust/sand and for a couple of years I tried to handle that by using filters taped/screwed onto the heat registers. The air was also extremely dry. Part of the problem was that the furnace return sucked air from the unfinished basement floor – now I know that’s very bad... This summer I got a duct guy to create a return from the floor above (he only does ducts). I also purchased a Humidifier unit to attach to the furnace. I believe part of the dust may be the brick around the registers starting to crumble or rust in the vents or who knows what. I'm not planning on replacing the forced-air system for now but need to guarantee healthy air for my family and tenants. Any suggestions on how to fix my air quality problems would be much appreciated! Recommendations on HVAC people and/or a plumber to install the Humidifier unit would be great...
