Wireless Water Meter Today
guy from DEP knocked on the door to install mandatory wireless water meter
Hes in the basement now installing
No real benefit for me that i can see (already had outdoor electronic water reader) but for the water company now i guess they don't have to send someone door to door so they save money.
Also i have a sinking feeling water bills are going to be going up with this thing

renew bathroom floor tile?
Unglazed ceramic tile
does not get clean with a mop
Found one guy who will put on a chemical that takes the stains out, it was an unmarked bottle though so i don't know what chemical. Then i found this sealer to put on after: http://www.stonecare.com/Shopping/ProductInfo.aspx?ProductID=7834
Someone else recommended to find someone to grind it down slightly.
Anyone have any thoughts, advice, or recomendation of someone to fix it?

the L train is overcrowded
Ferry service as another option is a good thing for the neighborhood, and not just for the ugly condo dwellers
there were actually plans to expand service to a pier on the northside not long ago, was looking forward to this.

insulation would have to cover completely side to side with no gaps, then it will help, also leaving a gap of air above the insulation is good so the sound has to keep going from medium to medium.
Although adding insulation will mean taking out the floor which in most cases is not an option
I noticed my upstairs neighbor subletted and the new tenant wore dress shoes with a solid heel. this was much louder than the regular tenant who wears sneakers. thick rugs with something under the rug help a lot if placed in the right spots, stopping the noise where it starts which is the best place to stop it.

time warner service hasn't been too bad for me (although i plan on cancelling it soon because its $200 a month for me and i have found cheaper alternatives by keeping only internet and ditching tv and phone)
i have 10mb down 512 up and its been consistent. Don't watch much tv so can't comment on that.

OP here,
yes there are wireless towers going up so they won't even have to drive by
Eventually they will make a website where you can log in and check your water usage daily if you feel like it.
Looking forward to the day when the electric and gas is wireless as well (those are the ones that are a pain in the but, not the water one which was already outside of the house). And hopefully not with 3 wireless boxes on the front of the house but just one that can send 3 signals.

same thing happened to someone moving in to the building next door to me. they demand a tip and hold your stuff hostage. Seems like its a common practice and part of the business for many moving people.

im on a street near kent and lots of trucks use it even though its not one of the blue lines so i'm for anything that reduces truck traffic on kent
I also use 2 parks on kent so i have to cross kent avenue and it can be pretty difficult to cross and they could open a 3rd park one day so anything that makes it easier to cross the street i'm for.
not sure if its better for me one or two way traffic though? There are already lots of trucks on kent are they saying they want to make kent one way so even bigger and badder trucks can use it? Then i'm against it.

the slats are necessary imo
when you walk by you see the whole unit very clearly without them, no privacy
i've seen a place on berry street and N7 that before it opened was a wall of bare windows and now that people have moved in its a wall of solid curtains. Almost never seen a curtain open, in fact people have started hiding stuff between the window and the curtain because the curtains never open - bicycle, boxes etc.

I'm the OP, here is the after photo:
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/8837/bathroomafter.jpg
i ended up using baking soda and peroxide
the peroxide seemed to be doing most of the work
used a kind of nylon stiff broom so i could stand and do the center areas
used old toothbrush for hard to reach areas
bought the best sealer i could find - Dupont Stonetech Bulletproof sealer:
http://www.amazon.com/StoneTech-BPSS12-32-BulletProof-Sealer-1-Quart/dp/B00065W8G8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1240777091&sr=8-1
So far seems ok but haven't tested it much yet. Only thing i may have done wrong is i think there still may have been a lot of baking soda on the floor when i applied the sealer (i vacuumed many times but did not mop with water) so i worry if its possible the baking soda may have absorbed and limited the effectiveness of the sealer
These guys came out to look and give estimate on grinding and cleaning. I ended up doing it myself but they were surprisingly helpful and honest so i mention them here:
www.perfectmarble.com - they restore/maintain natural stone

i would go with duct work if you have the walls open.
i wanted these ductless ones for my ground floor so that the little windows that are on the ground floor wouldn't be obscured by a window a/c. But with ductless there would have to be a unit in front of the house year round (wouldn't reach to the roof as far as i know) and then the other part of it inside the room year round and i'm not sure i like the look. (and now i hear it needs to be connected to a waste pipe?)
The "art cool" looks kind of cool in a modern way but its a single zone only system i believe.

i know someone in a very NON landmarked area
currently they have about 20 vinyl windows, some fall open or are leaky, don't lock, etc. They are about to replace all 20 so they all match.
Vinyl is the cheapest right? Seems people are recommending fiberglass? how much more is fiberglass, it sounds good but if its double the price...

if you want it to be done really well i would go the decoupling route. ALso put down some rugs where the kids move around. I'm in the same situation i want the garden floor to be quiet from footsteps. Renovated the garden floor but the ceilings were low so we didn't do much except a layer of sound board which didn't do nearly enough for my tastes.
Going to one day rip up my floor and look into if its possible to decouple from up here because on this parlour floor the ceilings are very high so i don't have to worry about losing a few inches

i had a contractor put in interior doors during a big renovation. They redid the floors, walls, and they bought new doors and framed the doors, painted the walls and doors, etc. Basically they did everything.
door still has a 1 1/2" gap and he says theres nothing that can be done. So even if you pay a huge premium like we did you may still get a gap under the door.

the building itself is a factory with tiny windows, think it would have to be totally changed to work as luxury condos? Or will they build 40 story towers on either side of the factory that are luxury condos.

Pool / ice skating rink right?
I must admit I was very disappointed when i heard they were taking away all the concerts, free parties, movie nights etc. Most of these events are very popular and well attended, even sold out which is weird because it is a large, outdoor venue.
I don't go swimming in pools and i don't ice skate so it doesn't interest me all that much.

Hmmmm, I never had a water meter installed because I hate the look of those outside boxes[and, of course, the original City contractor, Vanguard, was a criminal enterprise and the cause of a major municipal scandal]. After the first ten meterless years, I've paid dearly [twice the frontage charge] for the privilege. Maybe I should reconsider?
Posted by: Bob Marvin at September 1, 2009 2:01 PM in response to Wireless Water Meter Today
With some of the older wireless meters, someone had to drive by to get a reading. These most likely do not require that and are more accurate.

coned did this for me, uninstigated, several years ago. I have no remote readers outside anymore, rather the Coned rep on the street (or Coned remotely, not sure?) can remotely read my actual meters located in the cellar somehow.

Oooh, Con Ed one will be great. I went through a period of months where I got estimated bills from Con Ed because I missed the meter reader, and the website would reject my meter readings as 'invalid, not typical of prior usage patterns.'
My new water meter went in last week - good timing. I was just about to call the DEP and confess that my husband had cut the wire to the box accidentally while doing yard work.

I've asked ConEd but they charge for the installation of remote readers unless you're incapacitated in some way.

FWIW Brooklyn Union Gas installed a wireless meter reading device in my house at least 25 years ago. I wonder why Con Ed is so far behind?

OP - your water bills will be going up but not really because of your meter! They have been going up double digits every year.
Ideally, the new meters will allow people to manage their water usage better and to nip leaks in the bud.
