Standing outside the stucco-covered Gowanus townhouse, you’d probably never guess that inside is one of the most unusual interiors in all of Brooklyn.

The provocative and biomorphic digs is the result of a collaboration between the owner, Swiss-born artist Clarina Bezzola, and architect James Ramsey of Raad Studio, best known for his vision for the proposed underground Lowline park on the Lower East Side.

It came about thanks to two all-too-common predicaments: A relationship with a boyfriend-carpenter gone bad and a house whose historic charms had been obliterated in a gut renovation by a previous owner.

In need of an architect, Bezzola cold-called the first one who came up in a Google search, and it happened to be Ramsey.

They immediately hit it off, said New York Magazine, which features the home in its Fall 2016/Winter 2017 Design Hunting. (The magazine came out this month in print but is not yet available online.)

The duo created a stark white plaster-and-wood biomorphic interior with built-in seating. In the living room, a moon-like blob seems to be overtaking an l-shaped banquette. Inside the bubble’s craters are storage for firewood and a built-in seat that resembles the interior of a human ear — or the womb. It leads to a crater-like porthole in the floor above. A small jungle thrives on a patch of dirt in the bathroom, a wet room that is open to the rest of the house.

The effect is reminiscent of Bezzola’s own work, which emphasizes the biomorphic and Surrealist in a variety of media, including performance, sculpture and painting.

“Designing and envisioning these architectural versions of her work basically turned the entire building into an experiential art piece,” said Ramsey.
