victorian arch
We just got turned onto some serious renovation porn in the form of OurVictorianHouse.com. The site is a labor of love by a New Jersey couple which completely puts our own Renovation Blog to shame, probably because it’s run by someone who is actually doing the renovation himself and actually knows what he’s talking about. Imagine that! The site chronicles the gut renovation and period restoration of a dilapidated 1890 “Eastlake” Victorian house. (“Eastlake” refers to Charles Lock Eastlake who wrote Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery and Other Details in 1868.) With tons of photographs and careful step-by-step instructions on everything to repairing old windows to stripping marble (all on a tight budget), this is a must-read for the DIY Brownstoner set or anyone contemplating a renovation of any kind. Awesome.

  1. I’m guessing I turned you on to this — as I mentioned it in the broken ceiling medallion comments. Anyway, I love the site, but question the whole “tight budget” thing. I’m sure a lot of money is saved on the DIY labor (when does this guy sleep? Does he have a fulltime job?) but the wallpaper job in the parlor must have cost 5 figures. Also, some things don’t make sense to me, like the radiator in the picture above was removed, but it doesn’t appear that one was added elsewhere in the room to compensate. Plus there’s a good reason radiators are placed in front of windows.

  2. Yes this is a great site! I have been watching it for a couple of years. Seems like this guy has loads of free time and lots of willing friends to help with renovation. I love the High Victorian decor they have chosen.
