A good bathroom knows how to accessorize
So the kids' bathroom (well, everyone's bathroom for the foreseeable future, but the kids' bathroom long term) is finally finished.

The medicine cabinets are fabulous, despite the fact that they are from IKEA (I really hate that place) and cost half nothing. The shelves are not adjustable, but are set at good heights, and the best feature is the in-door storage - perfect for all those little things always rattling around a medicine cabinet. Seriously, the doors hold a lot. Much thanks to Ms. Architect for pointing these out to me. Omer didn't want them - he's convinced that they will rust. But for the price, we can replace them. Many times.

The glass shelves below the mirror are a little fussy for a kids' bathroom. They stay clean for about five seconds at a time. Oh well. I enjoy them for five seconds and then move on.
The only accessory I'm pretty disappointed with is the toilet paper holder.

I'll never understand the move towards holders that don't hold the roll very well. What happened to the old fashioned kind with the big spring inside? But we wanted something that matched the rest of the Kohler accessories, and this was it. Doesn't bother me enough to replace it, just enough to bitch about it.
We still haven't found a shower curtain that we both like. Perhaps I'm just subconsciously stalling after what happened to Mrs. B. But honestly, the tile color is very bold and I think the perfect shower curtain would be clear with a textured pattern, while Omer is holding out for some color.

Wow. I'd give anything for those towel bars in the tub. Heck, I'd give anything for grout that clean!

Yeah, in our old condo we never had a good place to hang all of those non-towel things like bathmats and back scrubbers, and I hated having the shower caddy under the shower head, so towel racks in the shower were a must-have. Now if I could only find the box with my shower radio!
Thanks for the compliments! The tile's been in for a while and I'm still loving it.

Love the sink!
All due respect to Omer, I couldn't agree more about a colorless shower curtain. The green tiles are powerful and if you put any more color in there, its going to be too much for a small space. You spent all that time and money on a sparkling new bathroom, why draw attention to a $20 shower curtain?

I hate feeling closed-in in the shower, so always go with just a clear liner myself, but if you must have curtain, I would do something crisp and white (maybe terry or that waffle-fabric sometimes used on robes, which would echo your square green tiles). The room looks so fresh and crisp now, it would be too bad to detract from that with more colors.

That's funny, the waffle terry curtain was exactly what I was looking at! Omer? Care to defend yourself?

Hey, you're lucky it has a flange to sort-of-hold the roll! In the French hotel we were in, the holder had NO flange, and the open side pointed towards you, so there was no way to unroll paper without two hands...it was easier to slide the roll off and unroll as you needed...

I love love love the green tile. What is it? I wish i new how to tile.
A cool way to hang a shower curtain without a rod is with this track system that hangs off the ceiling. It is actually what they use to hang the curtains between the beds in hospitals. You hang the track directly on the ceiling and then hang the curtain from those ball bearing chain thingys - no idea what they are actually called. Looks very clean, but is a little bit modern.
Just a thought.

I actually checked out those track systems back when we were in the planning stages, but we ended up going with a plain, custom-cut brushed nickel rod. It's the pattern/color of the curtain itself that we can't agree on. But like most things, the longer we disagree, the more likely I am to just go ahead and buy what I want. :-)

Amy -
Love the bathroom and especially love that sink! Was it a sink that was original to the house or did you buy it new?

Thanks. It's new. It was the only Home Depot transaction that went smoothly.

Amy: We're getting ready to order the Kohler Greek tub for our bathroom remodel -- is that what you ended up going with? How do you and the kids like it? Could you post some photos of the tub? Thanks!

look very nice how did you use do the work for the tile???
Posted by: benoit at July 10, 2007 9:57 AM
Benoit: the tile guys are part of our contractor's crew; I don't think they can be hired independently.
Eve: yes, we did use the Kohler Greek tub. We love the tub, but it was the drop-in part that was the problem. We had a big miscommunication with the architects (this was way in the beginning of the project) and had to do a very expensive fix to make it work. In the last picture you can kind-of see a deck around the tub that's a different color. Huge pain in the ass.
Now that it's all done, we love it, although it can be difficult to get into because of the depth of the tub. Once you're in there, though, it's glorious.
