I think I'll name him Mighty.

So, I was sitting here, feeling guilty that I hadn't written an entry in a while. Truth be told, there's just been nothing to write about. No work, no interesting planning or design decisions...nothing.

And then out of the corner of my eye, sniffing around the TV stand, I spotted the subject of this entry: at tiny, brown mouse.

We already knew we had mice. They had laid waste to a package of Fig Newtons a few weeks back and left droppings all over the kitchen. We had called an exterminator who put down those little black poison tubes, the ones where they supposedly go in and eat the poison and then considerately run far away to die. I also tossed a few glue traps in a drawer that they seemed particularly interested in, which was weird because we don't keep food in it.

But let me tell you, knowing that there are mice in your house and seeing them are two totally different things.

Now, I'm not scared of mice. If I had seen a rat, well, you all would have known it because you all would have heard the screaming. But mice don't scare me. I got up slowly, working my way towards a small box I thought I could catch him in. But, after eyeing me suspiciously for a few seconds, he took off.

Listen, if they didn't leave poop all over and chew on things, they could stay. I'm sure they'd be less trouble than the cats we had for ten years. But they do chew and poop and I want them out. So, since we can't do the number one recommended thing, which is close up all the holes (please, our house is one giant, gaping hole right now), what would you guys suggest? And no, I'm not taking the cats back from my mother's house. They're happy there.

You gotta reinstate those old cats, or better yet get feisty new ones (but I don't think they should be roaming outside if the holes you're talking about are that large!). There is, seriously, nothing better, although last week on the main brownstoner page people discussed a "zapper" device with equal affection.

Amy, My mom found one ON the stockpot apparently licking the pasta sauce splattered on the lid. I couldn't even step foot in the kitchen the rest of the night. My super plugged the holes, but I think there's a litter of them. Our glue traps have gotten four of them this season, but they just keep on comin'. Sorry I don't have any advice, but I wanted to commiserate.

Well that's the last time I have sauce at your place, Sandie! :-)

Rat Zapper!!! There have been a lot of posts and threads on this, btw.

YES the RATZAPPER is the best way to get rid of them. You will be AMAZED. IT is also very simple and clean. They go in a box and get zapped, the light flashes on top if one is in there the next morning. You turn it off and dump him out into the garbage. Then rebait and reset. You will get all of them with this believe me. The first time I used one, I set it before bed and before my head hit the pillow, the mouse was dead.

Where does one find this amazing invention? Is it sold at one of the local hardware stores?

I've only seen them online. We'll be getting a few for sure. Of course, now that I've seen the little guy, I'll feel guilty about it. But that won't stop me from frying him.

I advise using the bait they give you, it is clean and works great. I keep the bag of bait in my freezer till I need it again
