If I could kill Home Depot twice I would
So, as anyone who got though my Home Despot entry knows (anyone?), it took a lot of time and effort to wrest my Kohler Soaking Tub from their grasp. So you can imagine how I felt when I got a call from Ms. Architect letting me know that the tub had a hole in it. Not the big one where water is supposed to go down, but a pinhole-sized one near the drain. It seemed to hold water OK with the shower running; the water would just run over the hole. But when the tub was filled with water, it leaked.
Sigh.
And I thought I was done talking to Home Depot.
Try to track down something you’ve bought and paid for, and they put you on hold until you lose interest. But if you want to return something, they barely put you on hold at all. I was very surprised how easy the return process was. I told them that there was a pin-sized hole near the drain. They apologized and asked if I wanted a replacement. I said no thanks, the first one took over a month and I’d already ordered another from a place that was going to have it to me the next day.
So, all I had to do was wait for a bill of lading, and then call the freight company and arrange for pick-up.
Could it be? Was Home Depot redeeming itself?
Of course not. The bill of lading arrived two weeks later, for the wrong item. I had told them that there was a hole near the drain. They sent me a bill of lading for the drain itself.
I called them and asked them to fax the bill of lading this time. I waited five days. I called them again and asked them to fax it again. I gave them two different #s to fax it to. That was six days ago. They are waging a war of attrition. Why do I have the feeling that I’m going to have a bathtub in my parlor until we sell the house?
Update: They finally faxed a new bill of lading. For the drain. Again. Exasperated, I called and told them to forget I ever mentioned the word drain, and to please put on the return request that there is a hole in the tub, period. We'll see what happens.

Stick to your guns. I have faith in your ability to beat Home Depot at their evil game.

Amazing horrible for you, and frightening, as more and more businesses emulate the big box strategy. I remember when Lowe's in Gowanus opened, and I went there a day or so after the grand opening. Sales associates were actually following you around the store begging to help you. Now you can't find one anywhere who knows anything. I never buy anything at either place that isn't stocked on the shelf. And forget getting decent wood product. HD is good for basic supplies, tools and paint. I'd go to a specialist for tile, lumber, hardware or anything to do with plumbing. The prices and especially the anxiety will be less, in the long run.
I'm enjoying your blog. I wish you much success.

I wept bitter tears of frustration over my HD tub. That worked, but it took six weeks of agony to get there.
