Never having shopped there, we’re curious what Fort Greeners think of the design store Yu on Greene Avenue. Apartment Therapy had this to say about it:

YU is downtown Manhattan style improved and enriched to suit the mellower, warmer lifestyles of the Brooklynati. Selling a mixture of vintage furniture of asian, scandinavian and mid century origin along with new designs by Jonathan Adler, Dwell, BOOM, Jack Spade and others, Ludlow Beckett, the owner, has created a groovy, sophisticated personal look that is hip and easy going at the same time.

  1. I’m glad to have this shop in Fort Greene. It has a nice mixture of vintage and new furniture and home accessories, and good range of pricepoints including stuff affordable enough to pop in and pick up a last minute gift. The prices on vintage furniture pieces can be really high, but just wait for them to go on sale. The owner is friendly enough but not overbearing, and he’ll special order stuff like DWELL sheets if he’s run out of something you’re looking for. Overall, it’s a nice place.

  3. I love Yu! The owners are incredibly nice, and have excellent taste in merchandise. I have been in the store several times, and have seen many things I like, all at very fair prices.

My boyfriend and I went in there on Saturday night (during the blizzard), and on the spot we negotiated the purchase of a FANTASTIC vintage couch…they not only gave us a great price, but they loaded the sofa into their personal vehicle and brought it to us moments later about 6 blocks away (FOR FREE! IN THE SNOW!), and then carried it up 3 flights of stairs and wrestled it into the door of our brownstone apartment. I am proud to say it looks fabulous and was certainly much appreciated during yesterday’s inclement weather.

I can’t say enough about Yu, for their taste, prices, and superior service. A true neighborhood boutique well worth supporting. Thank Yu!!

PS: I think it’s a GREAT idea to feature locally-owned establishments weekly on this blog…

  4. Hats off to Yu and Ludlow! A few years back, I bought a midcentury cabinet for $900; the same one was in a well-known Manhattan store for $3600. Ludlow has a great eye and prices things very fairly.

I’ve bought many gifts and home accessories at Yu–it’ a great resource. And I like Frosted Moon as well–it’s particularly good for unusual and fun kids’ gifts.

  5. i love you and there are good deals to be had a friend and i went in there and bought a chair for 500.00 . we found the origin of it and the name and it was a 2500.00 chair from denmark. I love this chair.

  6. I’m so glad to see that shops will be profiled weekly on the blog! Thanks ‘Stoner! I’m new to Brooklyn (I’ve only been here 6 1/2 months after living 8 years in Manhattan). I love to visit artist-owned shops with funky merchandise, and Brooklyn seems to have so many of these wonderful places.

Oh yeah, and I agree with Mr. Minerva in reference to Frosted Moon Emporium. I stumbled upon that Fort Greene gem a few months ago while waiting for the bus. The store has lots of cute gifts and the woman who was working in the store that day was pleasant and helpful. I plan to make that place a regular stop whenever I need to get special gifts for friends and relatives.

  7. I think it’s great that Ludlow was ambitious enough to open a modern contemporary store in Fort Greene. His shop is the first of it’s kind here. I have bought a few things there and have admired many more. He really appreciates what he sells and it shows.
