Coop and Pet Policy – Your opinions and feedback needed

I am trying to convince other board members in my coop to approve a pet policy (either just cats no dogs, or dogs under say 50lbs). My guess is that it will enhance apartment values and overall atmosphere in the building as a lot of people are already having cats in the buildng unofficially. Do you think it’s a plus?
Do you foresee any future problems with this legallly or otherwise?
I would push for a monthly fee for a dog like many Manhattan coops do.

Dave, fee is for coop to get additoinal income. Trust me, we can use it.

Why would a dog incur a monthly fee and any other animal wouldn’t? Is it for elevator usage for the dogs when they have to go out?  A fee is usually a charge for a service. If you were to try the logic of charging for the privelege of owning an animal than I would say you are a pinko as animal bring happiness to their owners. And happiness is an inalienable right granted to all Americans (Democrat, Republican, etc) under the Constitution. God bless America.

Your guess is that it “will enhance apartment values and overall atmosphere in the building”.  I don’t really see why.  The question comes down to whether there are more dog lovers or haters in the real estate market.  Personally, I would be turned off by a building with too many rules.  John NYC seems to agree with my opinion.  I am trying to give you some honest feedback, so please don’t tell me to STFU!

Pets should be allowed contingent on an interview with the coop board and board approval of the pet. Anyone who disagrees should STFU.

John’s comment might have been slightly snarky, but I don’t think it called for a STFU. Off topic, but it’s not always less expensive to own a coop than a house. In a 2 family, the tenants help with the mortgage. In a coop, you pay maintenance on top of the mortgage.
Anyhoo, as the mom of 2 large dogs, I take offense to the 50 lb and under thing. Those little yappy rats are more annoying than big dogs any day.
But yeah, I think ALL buildings should allow pets.

I like the idea of a small month fee for the dog owners to cover the extra costs associated with removing dog hair from carpet. I don’t get the idea of the pound limitation but we have to clean our halls a lot more frequently due to dog hair.

I’m a dog person, so I’m against dog bans but not against some rules.  If the dog is causing problems, such as incessent barking, you can require the owner to hire a trainer to figure out the problem or send it to daycare while they are gone.  Of course, all of this should be stated in the beginning. 
I think a weight limit is pointless. Small dogs can be more of a problem than bigger ones.  Because they are small, owners think that they don’t need as much exercise and therefore are more likely to get bored and bark or be destructive.  Because they are small, owners are more likely to permit bad behavior (such as lunging at other dogs, biting).  I know plenty of responsible dog owners with well-behaved small dogs but by far, the noisiest dog neighbors we have had in Brooklyn have been the small dogs.  I think Shelties are great, but we’ve lived next door to several now, and I can’t believe the stamina every one of them had for barking–probably 12+ hours a day, with a few short breaks.  (I work from home and hear it all.)
When we got our current dog, we were living in a 20 unit building with an enforced no pets policy.   As some of the best tenants there, the LL allowed us to get a dog with a pet deposit when we said we were moving if he would not allow the dog.  I thought neighbors wouldn’t be happy, but instead they were all thrilled to have a dog in the building and many said they felt safer.  It also caused more conversations between neighbors, so I think adding a pet to the building was great for more than just us.
