Tilt & Turn

I know it is not exactly a "brownstone" problem, but I am thinking about changing all of the windows in my apartment with tilt & turn style windows. They are large -- 30-42 inchest wide and all about 78 inches high. 15 in total. Anyone have any experience with installing these windows, brands or install companies?

Window We Are

Hi all,
While I'm awaiting an estimate from Windows We Are, I'm wondering if anyone has negotiated their cost down, or is their price pretty much their price? Also, we're probably going to do wood in the front (so they'll be black on the outside and white on the inside) and vinyl in the back (for cost). Anyone have any other recommendations or tips that I should know about? Thanks!

New Double Glass in Old Windows?

Does anyone know if it's possible to replace an old single-paned glass window in a brownstone with new double-paned glass that would provide better insulation? These are floor-to-ceiling parlor floor windows, with four panes per window, but very thin glass. Is it possible to make them more energy-efficient, and if so, any recommendations for who can do this?
Thanks.

Window Identification

Window Identification

Does anyone know how to identify the brand of windows I have?

I can't find any identifying marks anywhere on them and need to get replacement/repair parts for the spring balances. The caps at the top of the balances have cracked and broken off in several windows.

I'm attaching a picture of some of the details of the popped sashes, in case anyone has the same windows.

Windows - Recs and Prices

So I'm looking to replace the windows in my (non-landmark) brownstone, and some ballpark estimates from those who have been through it would be a huge help.

The windows are of varying sizes, but generally 30x60, 30x70, and a couple of 30x96 (parlor floor). From what I've researched, it seems like my best bet would be wood-frame windows with an aluminum exterior.

What I'd love to know -

What kind of ballpark numbers am I looking at for this (e.g. window + installation + disposal)? Who did you use, and would you recommend them? Any tips in going through the bidding/negotiation/purchase/installation process?

Thank you!

3M Indoor Window Insulator Kit

We are entering our first cold season in a brownstone (after living in overheated apts for the past 20 yrs) and in addition to flannel sheets and fuzzy slippers, are considering winterizing our drafty, 20-yr old windows. Came across this product--3M 2141W Indoor 5-Window Insulator Kit--online and was wondering if anyone has tried it on windows with original wood frames that are stained and varnished. Our concern is that the double-sided tape will damage the wood finish. Thanks for sharing any experiences with the product or any other handy insulating drafty window tips.
