Guardrail for stair landing

We are redoing a stair landing and wanted to know if a guardrail is required by code? The landing is less than 30" above the finished Residential Code we do not need a guardrail, but NYC's code does not mention any exceptions to having a guardrail.

Need a brace for railing

I don't know if there is a name for this, but I need 2-3 of those spindle height floor-to-railing braces that sister the spindles and add a bit of stability to a wobbly railing. Anyone know what they are called and who to get them from?

Internal Stairs question

Wondering if anyone knows what the minimum width dimensions would be for internal staircase? Connecting two floors to create a duplex and would like to avoid a spiral stair if possible. Any info would be appreciated. TIA!

Love my stair guy!!

Can't recommend him highly enough: Bill from Fine Circular Stairs. He wasn't put off by the single step I needed replaced for my sunken living room. Several other companies weren't even interested in giving me an estimate! Bill came right on time (no small matter, it seems, with reno people!!) and provided a very reasonable and straightforward estimate.

When he came with the finished product, he installed the BEAUTIFUL brand new step in minutes and it blends right in with my floor.

Great guy. HIGHLY recommended.

Hi there,
Our 4 story Carroll Gardens co-op needs to renovate our common hallway/stairs area and are looking for any recommendations for contractors who could replace the wallpaper and carpeting.
Any advice appreciated!

basement stairs?

We need to get our basement stairs remade -- we were thinking we could buy precut stringers and do it ourselves, but we can't seem to find any for sale that are long enough. Anyone know anywhere that sells precut stringers (our basement is about 6.5 feet high) or can recommend a good contractor to replace them? Thanks in advance!

Exterior under-stoop help

the storage space under our house's exterior front steps/stoop rains down fine red dust on everything in there. I think we need to have the ceiling resealed or something...has anyone had anything like this done and can they recommend someone who could do it?

Stairs to Roof and Bulkhead...

I'm looking to convert hatch-and-ladder roof access to a staircase with a bulkhead (not a spiral staircase, a standard one). I'm in a brownstone, on a non-landmarked block. We own the building, so no co-op or condo permission issues.

One contractor said this would cost close to $50,000 because they'd have to cut some joists and because it affected the structural integrity of the building (we talked over the phone, not in person). This seemed really high.

Anyone done this? Any insight into what's needed here and what the price range should be?

Thanks in advance for your help--this is one seriously impressive forum. They must be very jealous of us in other cities.
