Skylite heat loss
Hey all:
How do you prevent heat loss thru this skylite, which is over the stairwell. I've heard about the 'build a plexiglas board' underneath. THat would be very difficult, for any number of reasons, in this case. What about wrapping something around the opening? It would be something, anyway.

Skylight Question
Denton mentioned in a recent post about heat loss through a skylight. I know that part of my upstairs tenant's heat issues have to do with a leaky skylight. I could probably get on a ladder and try myself, but there might be somebody out there who actually repairs, caulks, replaces glass panels on skylights. I suspect that this is a big problem upstairs. I wonder if Denton or any other brownstoners have found good, inexpensive solutions and/ or tradespeople who can deal with leaky skylights. Thanks very much.

Skylight Size and Placement
We are thinking of adding a skylight to the living room on the 4th Floor. There is currently a ceiling light in the middle of the room, where it would make sense to put the skylight. The room is pretty much square shaped. If we were going to put in a skylight:
1. What do we do about the beams supporting the roof? Is it OK to cut them for a 3x3 if we do appropriate interior framing?
2. Where should we put the skylight, if not in the center of the room? Near to the wall with the window to the front of the house? Or near to the wall where the door is?
Thanks!

Skylight Heat Mitigation?
Does anyone have a good technique for mitigating heat from sunlight coming through a skylight over the stairway in a brownstone? The light is great through the winter but the heat during summer days is unbearable upstairs because of it. Suggestions? Interior sunshade? Tinting applied to outside of glass? Thanks.

Skylights and roof rights
I live in the top floor of a co-op and want to add a skylight. Do I have to buy the roof rights for the space used? I've gotten different opinions.

replacing skylight
We want to replace our 3 skylights when we fix up our roof. Are there any recommendations for energy-efficient skylights that do not lose enormous amounts of heat in the winter?
What we have now are the skylights shaped like little sheds with the glass panes that have chicken wire inside. Maintaining security is also a concern.
Thanks.

Skylight-to-cover
I have a skylight on a warehouse - it's a "chicken coop". The metal struts have rusted & the mesh/glass is at risk of falling out. I want to just put a cover over the hole, not replace the skylight. What kind of trade should I get estimates from? And what material - iron work, boxed roofing material? It's roughly 4' x 6' on a flat roof.

trying to fix a lantern skylight
I am trying to restore my skylight in the bathroom. it has the pull system to open and close the side glass panels. At the moment there is no cord or chain. Does anyone know how and what to use to open and close the skylight

Skylight Not Sealed
My skylight isn't just drafty: On windy days (like today) an almost-constant stream of random sediment "rains" in to the apartment. When it snows outside and is very windy, it also snows in my kitchen. And on windy spring days, I sometimes get flower petals! The last part is nice, but overall I would like to fix this, and the roofer who recently redid the roof claimed that he saw no problem with the skylight. Does anyone have any ideas about what I should do? (I live in a co-op.)

Cleaning Stained Glass
I have a beautiful piece of stained glass on my top floor ceiling below a skylight but it is so filthy, barely any light gets through. The skylight is sealed and bolted shut. How do I access the stained glass to clean it?? Does anyone do this professionally? I saw a similar post on this site a few years ago but there wasn't a satisfactory answer.
Thanks in advance!
