who can fix this?

who can fix this?

hi Brownstoners,

I need to get my main entryway pillars repaired/replaced. Has anyone out there had similar work done? I really have no idea who to call to repair them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Salvaging Mosaic Tile

Salvaging Mosaic Tile

Is it possible to remove and salvage about 100 square feet of old mosaic tile floor? If so, could it be a DIY project or do you have to hire an expert? Thanks.

Replacing iron railing w/ wood balustrade

Our house is in a Brooklyn landmarked district. Our front porch has an iron railing, but both the original drawings and a Landmarks Commission document indicate that there was originally (in 1900) a wooden balustrade there.

I assume we'd be able to get approval to replace the railing. Any suggestions on who could do that work (removing the old and creating the new)? And should I expect that we'd be required to make the new fixture out of wood (all the new balustrades I find online are synthetic)?

Thanks!

Gordon

I'm interested in finding a job that specializes in restoration

I currently live in Crown Heights, right off the Parkway, and with all the renovations going on in my area and around Park Slope, I feel compelled to find a job that specializes in restoration.

Part of this urge I feel comes from the fact that my parents were antique collectors; as a child, summers and weekends were spent refinishing estate sale finds or reupholstering furniture. When it came time for me to go to college, I chose the School for American Crafts, where I studied jewelry design and metalsmithing. I am passionate about the DIY mentality, and I certainly have an appreciation for craft.

I was wondering if anyone knew of some good places for me to look at when searching for a job. I am most interested in lighting and ironwork, but I would not be opposed to architectural salvage, upholstery or woodworking. Again, I am not too particular about the type of work, or even the pay; I really just want to get involved in the restoration community because it is something that is in my blood.

As always, thanks in advance.

4 story limestone restoration

We have recently bought a 4 story limestone (1910) in Brooklyn. Most of the original detail is intact but a lot of the wood has been painted. Also, the house needs updated electrical wiring and some of the window frames need to be replaced. We would love to get some suggestions or recommendations on electricians, paint strippers, and window people. Also looking for someone to restore stained glass windows.
Thanks!

Resurfacing an old double sink

I am looking for a place that is able to re-enamel an old double sink one side is in good shape just dirty (the double depth side) and the other side needs some real help. Anyone know of some place that could do this and does the entire sink need to be re-enameled or can they do just one side? And lastly about how much would it cost? Thanks in advance.

The cost of new everything

I am thinking of buying a three-story brick townhouse (note, not in Brooklyn, a cheaper city) with floor plates of 2,000 square feet each. The building is basically a shell -- there are original staircases, existing fireplaces, etc. but it's going to need new EVERYTHING -- heating, electricity, windows, kitchens, baths, etc. I am trying to figure out what to offer for the building, but want to hear what most people think is an optimistic budget for this? $200k? Can anyone break it down, contractor style?
