Is skim coating necessary?
We just got bids back on from several contractors from our reno and one (of many) numbers that stuck out was the estimate for painting. The contractors said it's because of the skim coating specified by our architect. Is skim coating something we should definitely do? If so, any idea what a reasonable range would be to skim coat and paint about 2300 sq. ft. of new walls? Thanks!

painting plywood to look like sheet rock
we have a sheet rock wall as it meets the kitchen wall it meets a ply wood wall flush with a tape line.
is there anything we should treat the plywood wall with for the plywood wall to look like the sheet rock wall when painted or should we just throw a thin compound skim coat and then paint it.
What's the story with paint sprayers?
I have a whole brownstone to paint -- lots of freshly spackled and primed walls, and lots of unprimed pine trim. Painter estimates are coming in around $10K, so we're thinking about painting ourselves.
Are paint sprayers the way to go? Are they much faster than regular rollers? Is the paint applies evenly/smoothly? Also, I see there are lots of different kinds (airless sprayers, high-volume low-pressure, etc.) -- which one is best for what use? I would be OK buying a relatively expensive sprayer since we'd still be saving so much money from not paying for a painter.

what color did you paint your hall trim?
Please help me Brownstoners! I have to paint all the trim in my hallway. It's A LOT of wood, very ornate casing, wainscoting, high doorways, 4 floors of it. What color is the trim in your house? What are traditional colors for trim paint (house was built before the turn of the century)? Did you feel like you made any mistakes in choosing colors and if so what were they? Correct decisions, things you're very happy with? Please share. I need to make a decision fast! Thanks.

wallpaper hanger
