Renters' Insurance
I'm in Prospect Heights, in a ground-floor apartment in a building that just lost an entire unit to a fire. It's about time to get renters' insurance! Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, this might be a stupid question, but my apartment is above the boiler room and is sweltering even in the dead of winter, so I tend to leave my windows open. They do have security bars over the bottom half of the windows. Is there any way my apartment would be insured against burglary if I left the windows open of my own accord? (And does anyone have any advice for cooling down an apartment other than opening windows or using an A/C? I've already had all the radiators removed!)

Question for DIBS re insurance
Can you please speak to why you switched from Chubb to State Farm? Was it the rate alone? I'm curious to hear of people's experience in turning in claims - which companies were a nightmare to work with and which ones responded quickly?
Thanks, all.

Good/Bad Insurance Cos?
We are closing on a house in the slope in October... gulp. So we're at the point where need to get insurance for that right away. I found good agents (liberty mutual, brownstone, allstate) from referrals and reading postings here, and now we are ready to compare quotes. But one thing occurs to me. Does anyone have experience positive or negative, with an actual insurance company on claims? Because all the quote really tells me is price. If one company is good and another awful, that probably matters more than price...although of course we hope we never need to make a claim...
thanks everybody for sharing your thoughts on this. sorry if this repeats an earlier convo.. I could not find this info from a search.

Renovation Insurance
Hello brownstoners, we are about to embark on a rather extensive renovation & restoration but are having difficulty obtaining reasonable home owner's insurance. We will be using an insured and licensed contractor but the major insurance companies either won't insure the place at all during renovations or insist on a special policy that totals ~$10000 per year!Is this the common practice during renovations? Seems outrageous given that the builder has there own insurance. Has any of you good folks gone thru such a thing? Any and all advice will be appreciated.

Flood insurance
Hi,
I'm working on a story about flooding and flood insurance for a local publication and I'm interested in speaking with people who were required to buy insurance because their houses are in a flood zone. If you fit the bill and have some time to chat today (Weds.), please email me at nycflood@gmail.com. Thanks very much.
