total wall system for brownstone facade

Elite renovation contractors hve given me a quote to r edo the facade of my brownstone using the "total wall fiberglass system." building will be cleaned with a machine usiing steam and air, then a clear gel insulation is sprayed on- t his also acts as a bonding agent - then two 3/8"thick coats of total wall fiberglass mix. Has anybody heard of this- or have any experience with it or with Elite renovation?

refacing facade permits

Hi,
I can't tell if we've been duped or just had a misunderstanding with our contractor. We thought we were all ready to reface the facade of our 4 unit, 4 story brownstone coop. We got a loan, interviewed several contractors, called references, read archives and compared bids. Just as we were all set to begin, the contractor tells us that we need to file a permit with the DOB. We thought all along that this was something they would do. I looked on the DOB website and an engineer or registered architect needs to file the permits for refacing. Has anyone hired one of these professionals, separate from your refacing contractor, just to file the permits? Any recommendations or advice (aside from "we're idiots")? Thanks!

renting scaffolding

What is a good place to rent scaffolding? The front of my brownstone in Bed Stuy needs repair. My handiman/super says he can do it, but he will need to rent scaffolding

Contact for Aziz?

We used Aziz for our repointing in 2005 in Fort Greene. We'd like to use him for another job, but cannot track him down. Does anybody have his information, or know if he's still in business?

siding contractor

We are looking for recommendations for someone to side our wood frame house. It is currently covered in asphalt shingles, and we would like to get prices on just removing the shingles and restoring the original clapboard, or taking the house down to the studs and insulating and re-siding with new wood. We've looked through the archives but haven't had that much luck so far. Many thanks.

Historic Photographs

I believe this topic has been discussed before…. I am wondering the best way to access NYC Department of Finance Historic property photos? I would love a historic photo of my property. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

How to get rid of Efflorescence from Bricks

Two years ago I had paint removed from by townhouse. About six months ago, I started to notice some whiteness around a couple of bricks which I think may be efflorescence. How can I get rid of this?

powerwash or paint??

powerwash or paint??

I have a mixed use buidling with a faux brick finish ( about 1/2" thick). The facade is getting black with dirt or exhaust from street traffic. I'm wondering what the most cost effective way to "clean" it up. Powerwash or paint? Any suggestions, refferals, and/or estimates is appreciated. ( building is 22' wide and 3 stories tall). thanks!!

Time required for "scratch coat" to dry

We want to re-brownstone our stoop and have gotten different suggestions about two things:

1. Amount of time necessary for the scratch coat (cement) to dry before applying the brownstone.

2. Need to re-do the scratch coat at all. Currently the brownstone has come off in patches, exposing the grey cement beneath. One of the contractors has said that the concrete below seems to be in good shape, so it may not be necessary to re-do it at all. Is this legit, or simply a way of cutting corners?

We'd appreciate any advice on either topic.
