Amana quiet cool air conditioner available-$40, moving
Air conditioner is several years old, but works well. It is the appropriate size to cool a bedroom. We're moving on Sunday, so the buyer must pick up on Saturday, walk it down 2 flights of stairs, and get it home. We also have a used electric dryer and washer available for the same price. Call me at (347) 563-8700.

Basement window a/c possibility?
Hi everyone,
So we have a duplex where we've converted our basement into a liveable space and it's wonderful. Except the humidity can get pretty beastly in the summer. Our windows are pretty tiny - 23" W and 19" H. And we're looking for an a/c that could fit into that hole that is as quiet as possible, energy efficient, and around 9,000-10,000 BTUs. Any recommendations?

Cooling with air from basement
Is there any reason houses aren't cooled by pulling basement air to the roof via a duct along the back of the house, then dumping the cool air down into the top floor? SHouldn't this, in conjunction with an attic or whole house fan, do a nice job? Is there any hvac guy out there with a holistic approach to these things?

Powerful Window AC, $250
Frigidaire FAS156NIA2, 15,100 BTU, only 2 years old, stored inside over winter, in great shape and cools giant rooms up to 880 sq feet! If you have a big apartment, a floor-through brownstone or a loft, this is the air conditioner for you. It's one of the most powerful ACs you can buy which run on 115VAC. Installs in a regular window with a ledge. Includes remote and energy saver mode (Energy Efficiency Ratio: 10.7). Come and pick it up in Prospect Heights and say goodbye to the summer heat. $250 (paid > $450 new).

How to install a Window Air Conditioner in a Brownstone with Security Bars?
Okay, so I am moving into a ground level unit of a Brownstone/Townhome in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The unit has security bars on all windows, which is great. These security bars are straight and flat. I.E. they are not the kind that have a bump out to accomodate an air conditioning unit. Thus causing my delima. How do I install a traditional window air conditioning unit into the window? The space between the bars and the window is very minimal...definitly not enought to fit the window unit I currenlty own. Are there very narrow window AC units made for this purpose? Or is there a way to install a standard AC unit in such a way that the majority of the bulk of the unit would lie on the interior side of the window? I have heard about portable air conditioner units which do not sit in your window, but I have heard they are much less effective at cooling than a Window unit. Plus they are SUPER expensive by comparison. Any help or suggestions are much needed and sincerely appreciated!
Price quote sound right?
I have central air and the condensation from the pipes is leaking down to the apartment below. I had someone come in today to look at the pipes and he said that some were poorly wrapped and some were not wrapped at all and that he would have to break through at least one wall to get to all of the pipes to wrap them properly. He quoted me $1800 for the job which he says will take 2 days (and does not cover fixing the walls that he breaks through). Does this price quote sound right? It seems a bit high to me, but I've never had a/c problems before so I don't really know.
Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks!

Central Air Repair
Our Central Air unit (we have the kind that snakes through the house from the basement like a spider -- forgive my ignorance, can't remember the name) has not been working this season. The people who installed it with whom up until now we have been quite happy, are just not getting it fixed. They come over 2-3 times a week to "find the leak" or "bleed the system" or do whatever it is that they think is wrong with it and of course only several hours after they leave does it stop working. Then it takes several unanswered phone calls to get them back. They keep saying that we have to bleed the unit until all the air is out but we can't seem to get it to work. We are hesitant to fire them and start from scratch with a new company, since we suspect that that will me quite expensive. Any ideas? If we should cut our losses, does anyone know of a reliable, responsive central air repair service?

AC + sleeves needed
Has anyone investigated AC sleeves? I need to install a small one (with an AC) for a bedroom. All I can find are the huge ones.
The casement windows can't handle units, and central air is not an option.
Any local vendors or product recommendations would be appreciated.

Thru the Wall AC Installation
We're attempting to install a thru-the-wall AC unit in our bedroom and need to find a contractor to do this minor job. Does anyone have a recommendation?
Thanks!
