Moving Car from Coast to Coast
I need to hire a mover to bring my '66 Chevelle across the country. Has anybody had their car shipped? Any recommendations?
Thanks!

Sorry that I cannot make a recommendation. Driving my '65 Plymouth Fury
cross-country is a very fond memory from many years ago...out through the north, back through the south. Nearly the entire time on local roads, and with lots of planned and unplanned detours. A fantastic way to experience this amazing country and countryside.

I think by rail might be the best way to do it, at least it used to be. My father shipped my car to me in CA from MN that way in 1993 and he's a frugal guy.

P.S. Oh, and gorgeous car, masterbuilder!
Vinca, I am so jealous. I've wanted a Fury since I was in college. Do you still have it?

I'd drive it if it had seats in it! It's only partially restored. It does run, but I'm picturing myself broken down in Montana during a snowstorm...

I used dependable auto shippers to ship my car from San Francisco to their facility in NJ. It cost about $750, took about 10 days and they were great.

Sadly, TM, the Fury was stolen nearly 30 years ago while parked on Houston near the Bowery. I still remember the feeling of walking up to find the parking spot empty.

fedex has a car shipping service.

I had a 68 Olds 442 shipped from Southern California a few years ago. I believe it was about $1,400. Let me know if you're interested in that and I can find out who shipped it.
There are many auto transport companies that ship multiple cars at once all around the country. I believe Passport Transport is one of the largest. If you can find a copy of Hemmings Motor News (brown paper cover) on a good newstand, it will list all of them.

Dave,
If you can dig up the info on the carrier that would be great. On Craigslist a large heading reads that all car transport ads are scams, so as I peruse the internet for carriers, I now see the outfits are mostly brokers and a lot of fees can get tacked on. Some of them do look like they could be Paypal scams also.
(I did check out Fedex and it was like $3000. Too much.)
Thanks all!

masterbuilder, I will email the place I bought mine from... www.vaultcars.com and ask them.
The one I bought can be seen on their sold pages...the white 68

you could also call a moving company (like an Allied or United) who they refer customers to - normally movers won't transport cars but they always work with a company they trust...

Here's who Steve at Vault Cars has used. He ALWAYS uses enclosed carriers (as do I) and has had some bad experiences with any open trailer carriers...
Horseless Carriage 800-631-7796
Reliable 800-521-6393 or 800-528-5709
Intercity lines 800-221-3936
I know Horseless Carriage has been around for decades.

Try DAS out of Linden NJ
Had my benz shipped from LA for $950, but that was 2 years ago. Took about a week, I guess I got lucky

That's sad about your stolen Fury, Vinca. Looking for it in an empty parking lot.

I know this isn't helpful or anything but...If I had the time, I'd drive that cross country for you for the price of gas. And I'd treat it better than most people treat their kids.
That is a gorgeous machine. Truly.

DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers) shipped my saab from LA to Linden NJ in 2005. Closed container cost about $1000. No problems.

We also used DAS

LA -> somewhere in NJ.
May have been Linden.
Cant remember the price
Also no problems

The ones that I recommended are door-to-door delivery. These guys operate very expensive, high quality rigs. They are among the best and may be slightly more expensive than others.

Try auto driveaway. They have been around a long time and screen their drivers.
Note, first you need to decide whether you want it driven or shipped
