Getting Rid of TONS of Books
I have something like 50 boxes filled with books that, frankly, most people would not want (e.g., political nonfiction). They are all in my basement and I want to get rid of them. I can't even carry the boxes up, let alone deal with a stoop sale. The home run would be finding a bookworm who was willing to come take them all. Short of that, I would pay someone to carry them up, load them up, and dispose of them (far too much for recycling). Any thoughts on how to get this done?

Do you drive? If so, I would recommend taking them to the Strand and selling them. Make a few bucks and buy yourself a nice lunch :-)

Oh, wait...you don't want to carry them up from your basement. Maybe hire a neighborhood teen to bring them up to a car/truck for $10-15 and then take them to the Strand for sale?

The American Library Association maintains this page re: book donation programs: http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/library/libraryfactsheet/alalibraryfactsheet12.cfm
The NYC Dept. of Sanitation also maintains a page for reusable items, covering books and much more, called "New Homes for Old Stuff": http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/new_homes/new_homes.shtml
Strand may not take your books. Be sure to call before driving over.

The strand will send someone out with a van to buy them from you and carry them up from the basement.

Post on Craigslist, say free books, must take them all, and you will probably catch the eye of a fellow who did this for us and also a friend. He is a book dealer. He's doing you a favor because most of the books are probably worthless. (My husband is a book dealer also.)

Man with van + have the delivered to Housing Works = tax deduction. You are still out of pocket the cost of the man with van, though.

I'm a bookworm, I'll take them all. denton at speakeasy.net
I'll pick them up. If you have anything worthwhile, I can work something out.

Check with the Tamiment Library at NYU: "A center for scholarly research on labor history and radical political movements." http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/research/tam/
They might be interested, depending on what you've got.

I believe Housing Works will pick up.
