Re-upholsterer for Old Settee

Re-upholsterer for Old Settee

I have a heavy, old ( 1910-1920) flat back, roll arm settee that was purchased at the 1966 contents auction of the soon to be demolished Hotel Astor ( Times Square area ). It needs to be refreshed. (Unfortunately, it was first recovered in the late 60's). It also needs repair to one of its wooden legs, which is begining to split. I am not sure of the exact style but have seen similar ones on the antiques roadshow. ( Imperial, possibly?) Does anyone know of a reputable reupholsterer in the Bay Ridge up through Park Slope area. The gentleman our family used for many years is now deceased. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry no photo , it's in storage.

Try Fairchild's, which is in Queens.

Not sure if you're looking for updating it with a modern fabric, but there is a vendor in Red Hook that was recently featured on this site that specializes in re-upholstery. Her work looked very nice. The name escapes me, she used to run an antique shop somewhere on Van Brunt I think?

ps. take lots of before pictures so that you can show up the before and after when the work is completed!

The place in Dumbo (I think it's on State -- it's a storefront -- M&R???) is supposed to be reputable. I have not used them myself.

Try Das on Cortelyou Rd. He was recommended to me by one of the antique dealers on Atlantic Ave. He did a nice job reupholstering my 1790s English sofa -- a piece I wouldn't entrust to anyone but an expert. You do need to be clear about your expectations about the finished job: eg. the welt style, what materials you want used (I had him use horse hair for the stuffing because it's traditional for something of that age).

Crescent, there is a interior decorator on 3rd ave and 83rd st. I can't remember their name. But I've been inside looking for fabrics and they seemed very professional. I didn't use them for re-upholstery but they may be able to help you as I believe they also do that.

CG- I get down to Fairway in Red Hook all the time. I will look into it. I am not sure how I want to proceed with respect to the fabric, but due to the style of the piece it can't be too contemporary... that mistake was already made. Thx-

Try Jack G on MacDougal around 39th St

I've heard good things from neighbors about DAS Upholstery on Courtelyou. He gave me estimates on some pieces I have and seemed good, but I haven't used him yet (finishing other projects first).

I third DAS on Cortelyou Rd. He does great work and his prices are reasonable.

Italiana may be thinking of Albert Menin @1705 1st Ave @ 88th St., but anyway, they're the best. 212-876-3041
