Penny Tile Disaster?

Penny Tile Disaster?

This penny tile was installed by a professional tile contractor.

The seams between the 12x12 mesh sheets of penny rounds are very noticeable and, in my opinion, unacceptable.

How do you remedy this situation at this point, and is it that common?

Comments

It takes lots experience to get penny tile perfect. The only way to remedy the situation is to remove the tile and do it over.

The picture looks like it's not grouted yet. If that's true, any grout will lessen the undesired effect, and a darker grout will lessen it considerably.

That's a shame and it is not common. If shower floor tile seams must be visible, they should line up with the drain for symmetry by the tiler or plumber.
It has to be removed and redone.

I agree that this is unacceptable and you are completely justified in asking it to be redone. Penny rounds are hard to work with and you might consider switching to small hexes instead.

who did your shower ? I need a contractor to do one like this . I already have the materials And if I may, how much was it ? Thanks !

Thanks for the replies. It is already grouted--this is the final result. I'm going to push for them to remove it and redo. Is it a difficult process to remove and redo, and should I expect a lot of resistance to this solution?

(crownheights2007: this is an out of state job.)

It will take a couple hours to remove the tile and clean up the Thinset and prep. A few more hours to reset the tile and cut the little pieces at the edges. It's going to have to dry overnight than grout it. So, I don't imagine they will be thrilled to hear that you want it done over.

I should add that my estimate was adjusted upward when the tile person learned I was installing penny tile, and I was told that it required extra labor and skill to install hex and penny. I agreed to the adjustments--no problem, no complaints. But I was expecting a skillful installation in exchange.

Well, your tile guy should do the right thing and do it over. You paid extra for that and he came up short. Since he told you it required extra skill he should look at the first go around as practice.

Start again but don't use spacers. this way it will look like one piece not squares.

the tile guy had a bad eye..tear it up and do it again...everyone fucks up at least once, but should man up and do it right

Agree it's unacceptable and have them redo it. Hope you didn't give them any money.

I agree that penny rounds are very difficult to install. If you don't mind going with a black grout, I remember reading something about a grout dye. That might be a solution instead of ripping it out.

DoorSixteen.com might have some advice on installation. They did theirs themselves, looks great.

That's just lack of attention to detail. People are giving the contractor too much slack. Yes it is more difficult to install these types of tiles, but not very hard (I've done mini hex tiles myself in an area this size). It's such a small area too. Need's to be pulled up and redone.
