Need Small Fireplace Screen
I'm looking for screen for a working fireplace in a brownstone but the ones I'm seeing at fireplace stores are all far too big for the opening of this fireplace, which is small -- 19" wide x 21" high -- set in a traditional marble mantle. Anyone know if there's a place, preferably in Brooklyn, to find nice-looking traditional wrought iron screens that fit these sorts of small openings? Used would be fine, too.

We had the same situation when we moved into our place a few years ago with a similarly small fireplace--looked far and wide, both online and in stores, for a smaller size screen. Didn't find anything narrower than 36" (or maybe it was 30"?)--there seems to be a standard size--but we didn't want to obscure the face of the fireplace itself with that big a screen. There are definitely places that will make them in custom sizes (Google to find them), but they are very expensive.
In the end we gave up and just use it open--we're always in the room when a fire's burning and there's nothing flammable nearby, so it seems to be OK.

The Victorian Fireplace Shop has a line of small screens (most of them wildly overpriced): http://www.gascoals.net/ Both Target and Ace Hardware (Pintchik, locally) carry various screens. If it fits your taste, the classic fan-shaped firescreen might work for you too. Or you could buy a 3-part folding screen and remove the outer sections. Northline Express is just one of many places that sells fireback feet which can be used to hold up the remaining piece. I looked for literally years without success. Refused to have a custom one made because of the crazy price. Ended up buying one in the UK when visiting family. Perfect size, lightweight (carried it on the plane), cost about $20. Of course I realize that's no solution if you're not traveling to Blighty any time soon but the small ones are incredibly hard to find. Maybe one of the ironworkers over on 3rd Ave could you make you one up from a drawing?
