We have an almost identical mantle in our Prospect Heights home. We stripped the varnish off and left the wood in its natural color--- the details really popped.

I have always wondered how easy it is to get these mantels off the wall in one piece and move them without damage.

Do they come off in one piece? Are the firebox and tiles one piece? It seems likely that some disassembly is required. Anybody know?

the mantel is very easy to remove. the firebox is built into the brick/marble, and more difficult to remove.

This one is pinned in from the side to keep it from falling forward. So it is relatively simple. The trick is to pull the (in this case old flat head nails)out without damaging the side boards. Then the sections stack on top of one another. This one separated at the self below the crown molding and again at the shelf below the mirror. Then all the pieces are a manageable size and weight to transport.
