Outdoor Lighting

I own a 3 family house in Park Slope. My front yard is very well lit by an adjacent street lamp. Do I still need to turn on the light by my entrance door? Is it a legal requirement? If yes, what's the best solution to ensure the light is automatically turned off during day light?

Thank you.

A few weeks ago someone said on here that it's a legal requirement. I don't know about that but for auto on/off you can either have a light sensor or put in a timer switch where the on/off is - you have to adjust it as the seasons & daylight savings change.

Many nice looking exterior house lamps now come with motion sensors and light sensors.

take it from me...you must have a light outside your door on from dusk til dawn...i've got a violation i'm in the process of clearing up from the previous owner. so stupid.

Lighting requirements available at links below. As Arkady and DIBS already noted, where continuous lighting is not required, the owner's obligations can be satisfied with motion and light sensors widely available through Lowes, HD and elsewhere:

Easy to just leave the light on with a long life/energy saving bulb!

Even easier to use an energy-saving bulb with a light sensor that automatically turns on the light in the eve...

Thank you, everyone, for very helpful suggestions. The energy saving lamp with light sensor sounds perfect!

The energy saving lamp is not perfect light product. This lamp includes mercury and can be dangerous for your health. We prefer to use led lamps. It is save and Low power consumption, No infrared or ultraviolet radiation and have long life with warranty period till 3 years!
Fo example check here - http://www.nasena.co.uk
Of course you should find and another sites for led lightings.
