Dog Pooping in Front of House

There seems to be a poop problem on our block. This girl on our block has 3 dogs (pitbulls). We dont mind, the dogs are well trained and havent been bothering anyone. But recently there has been a lot of poop in front of our house. Yesterday, our house had a bunch of dog diarrhea, my dad cleaned it, and 2 hours later, again, poop all over. So he became furious because he couldnt open the front gate of our house. Everyone on the block knows her dogs are just pooing everywhere. He confronts her and she gets all defensive. "Prove it" she stated. Okay, so my dad walked away and told me about this and we bought a surveillance camera from RadioShack, rather cheap too. What actions do we have from her dogs pooping everywhere? Also their dogs are never on leashes (i think its illegal?). This has never been a problem to us because they seem well trained BUT now that she doesnt seem to be owning up and cleaning her dogs poop, is this something we can bring to her attention as well?

Okay, I know there have been many postings about working with your neighbors (e.g., bags on tree blocks, etc) but this girl just seems uncooperative.

Thanks again.

BTW-that NYDaily News article on dog shit in Sunset Park is correct :-\

While I don't really condone false reporting, the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is to call animal control every time you/your father sees her with her dogs off the leash. If you report a 'dangerous dog' running around off leash, they may show up quickly enough to catch her and scare her into leashing the pooches. For the renegade pooping issue, I don't know.

How upset are all the other neighbors and are they willing to step up and do something as well???

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 9:26 AM

I'd phone 311 & get your local Sanitation people to look into it. Tell them you have photographic evidence. They can issue a violation & it's not so draconian a solution.

not picking up your dogs poop is the most disgusting, disrespectful thing you can do to someone's property. and it's really a health hazard as well. why don't you just scream at her and say something, like "pick up your damn dog's sh-t, you b-tch?" im being serious, sometimes you have to be a little more vocal about things like this. sometimes people need to hear that for them to make a change. you cant be passive and call 311 and hide in your house and complain and seek advice on a blog. this is NYC!!! remember that!

and i KNOW others are going to be like, rob that is SUCH stupid advice. well, maybe, maybe not, it's an alternative and im offering it anyway.

oh yeah, also, what was the point of mentioning the dogs were pitbulls? does it matter? it's like when someone tells a story and will casually drop the name of a specific race.

You can actually file comlaint on the DOS webstie. Give the block and the time she usually walks her dog. If you get enough neighbors complain about it they will send an undercover officer to catch her in the act and fine her.

I find the one thing that works in our nabe is to post signs. But I do it in positive maner. Our signs say "keep bay ridge beautiful. Please pick up after your dog." I found them to be more effective then taking a more admonishing tone like "Pick up after your dog!!!"

Posted by: italiana71 at September 25, 2009 9:57 AM

Sanitation really sends undercover officers for this kind of thing? Wow!

Posted by: InsertSnappyNameHere at September 25, 2009 9:59 AM

*rob* i totally agree. i did this once although for a different problem, and it worked. if people are selfish, rude, inconsiderate, etc.... then you need to throw it back at them. I personally am a fan of calling her "a self-entitled bitch." really, that applies to a lot of Brooklyn residents. just change bitch to a**hole for a guy.

Posted by: wine lover at September 25, 2009 10:03 AM

post her Facebook page here. or maybe just find her Facebook page, try to become her friend somehow under some alias...and then write on it how horrible it is what she is doing so all her friends see it.

I am old.

Posted by: Petebklyn at September 25, 2009 10:20 AM

@rob - i just mentioned the dogs because theyre BIG dogs and their shits are HUGE. if it was a chihuahua, i would say its a chihuahua. trying to put their shit into perspective. but its 3 HUGE pitbulls. i have nothing against them. i actually liked her dogs until they started this shitting rampage.

Posted by: guikazoid at September 25, 2009 10:20 AM

Come on, be a Brooklynite of old. We had the same problem years ago and the solution is simple: if you're sure that it's her dogs then each and every time that a "deposit" is made in front of your property, simply gather it up (sanitarily, of course) and redeposit it ON her front door (and I do mean ON the front door). Let's stop the Mary Poppins crap (no pun intended) and fight fire with fire. This is only a small example why so many people run roughshod over others. No one retaliates!

Posted by: Hank at September 25, 2009 10:26 AM

@DIBS - the other neighbors are upset too. one other gentleman confronted her and she went crazy. told the guy "why dont you tell this to my husband". the husband confronted the guy... the guy was probably in his 50s, the husband in his 20s... the guy tells this guy to keep his wife in check. lol. drama :)

Posted by: guikazoid at September 25, 2009 10:27 AM

If you know where she lives, you know where to discard the poop after you collect it.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 10:28 AM

What Hank said.

Posted by: daveinbedstuy at September 25, 2009 10:32 AM

okay geekazoid, point well taken. :) and yeah youre right... pitbulls poop are insanely large. and smelly.

We had a similar situation on our block with a youngish owner of a pit bull who let his dog crap all over the block and never pick it up (I have seen him on several occasions sneaking around the block as to not be seen letting his dog crap everywhere) and whenever it appeared in front of our house, I would scoop it up and put it right in his doorway (he lived in an apt. house on the block) and guess what? I have not seen dog poop in front of our home for a few years now.

Posted by: bklynrocks at September 25, 2009 10:42 AM

Try to reason with the dog's.

Posted by: IMBY at September 25, 2009 10:44 AM

I once had a young couple that insisted on walking two small lap dogs on my front lawn , which is easily accessible from the sidewalk and not gated. From time to time I noticed small deposits on the lawn and in my flower beds. After confronting them several times to no avail, I was told by a nieghbor of mine, who is a police Lt. to file a harrassment complaint/report with my local precint. I did so and since they have become aware of me doing so, the activity has ceased. I like Hank's idea but after several uncomfortable exchanges I felt I had to let them know "officially" that their behavior was unnieghborly and would not be tolerated. Good Luck!

Posted by: Crescent Hill at September 25, 2009 10:49 AM

Call 311/DOS, whatever you have to do to stop this inconsiderate behavior. Due to the threatening husband, maybe you could get a restraining order? Go to the Precinct yourself with the evidence (I meant the video, but the actual byproducts in bags might be effective too!)

Also, even if they are sociable dogs, the sight of unleashed dogs on the street gives tacit permission to owners of unsocialized, uncontrolled dogs. Some people are -- perhaps irrationally - deathly afraid of animals. Some dogs, on leash, don't like other dogs. Let me tell you, there's no better 11:00 pm fun than having a loose dog run up to your leashed dog while the owner is ambling along down the dark block saying "don't worry, he's friendly!" The neighbors don't enjoy waking up to the snarly sounds and yelling either.

This is really bad. It gives a bad name to all dogowners. I have 3 dogs, 1 medium and 2 largeish. They too have big ><#$%s. Would you like a contribution to add to your revenge ammunition?

this is verbatim btw... right outside my old apartment in uptown manhattan...

im scooping up my pitbull's poop.

Rob: the c-fruit in Park Slope are better mannered...aren't you lucky you live here?

Posted by: cmu at September 25, 2009 11:27 AM

I've called people on letting their dogs leave deposits on sidewalks - usually works, but I try to be polite about it - along the lines of "We try to keep the block beautiful for everyone, blah, blah..."

But 3 pitties - that's a whole lot of shit!

If she's a renter, try talking to her landlord.

Posted by: JonB at September 25, 2009 12:13 PM

Give Precious the hose! SRSLY!

Posted by: modsquad at September 25, 2009 12:13 PM

And if it doesn't put the shit in the basket It gets the hose again!

Posted by: modsquad at September 25, 2009 12:15 PM

"If she's a renter, try talking to her landlord."

Good idea. The president of our block association did this after he and I both (separately) confronted a lady who never picks up the crap when her dogs go on our block. She would take them to a tree pit right in front of her building and not pick anything up. When we said something to her about it she'd ignore us. Our block assn. prez told her landlord about it and....it stopped.

Posted by: East New York at September 25, 2009 12:45 PM

If she's in a private home you could always relocate the poop to her stoop.

Sorry, but I think your dog dropped this back there so we wanted to make sure we returned it to you!

Posted by: TownhouseLady at September 25, 2009 1:15 PM

I used to have a problem with people not cleaning up after their dogs in front of my house, and it drove me up the wall. I purchased a small sign online that simply says "Please clean up after your dog." It works & people have respected that. I've never had to clean my sidewalk in the nearly two years since I affixed the sign to my fence.

Posted by: PresRez at September 25, 2009 1:41 PM

If you know where she lives - pick up the said poop and smear it on her doorknob.

Posted by: dirty_hipster at September 25, 2009 1:59 PM

"Give Precious the hose!
Modsquad, the owner should be hosed, not the dog.

"@rob - i just mentioned the dogs because theyre BIG dogs and their shits are HUGE. if it was a chihuahua, i would say its a chihuahua."

Q, trying to disguise your breedism under this cover simply won't fly. As Rob said, there was no need to mention the breed. Poor pups, they can't help it. In the future, to avoid defaming pitbulls, simply pick up all the poop and put it on a scale. You can then advise us of the weight of said poop without having to resort to breedism.

Future breedism coming from you will be reported to Mr. B., and Rob will poop on your facebook page.

HA HA! Its true!! I swear an Akita actually shits out MORE than it eats. There's on old man on my block with an Akita. When I see him when I walk my doggie, I help him pick up his Akita poop because it looks too heavy for him. Its actually a sight to behold.

Posted by: HoneysuckleWeeks at September 25, 2009 3:12 PM

Photo evidence. Giant poster. Public humiliation. Done.

Posted by: west1 at September 25, 2009 3:40 PM

The breed does matter. Pit Bulls can be intimidating in simply their appearance. This comes from the fact that they are capable of killing people. I seriously doubt the OP is going to yell at anyone with three pit bulls off of their leashes. You can call this breedism if you like. But there is no one to blame for this but ourselves. Different breeds of dogs exist because we made them to fit a purpose. Pit Bulls in case it isn't obvious, were bred to fight. Let's be honest most people in rougher neighborhoods have pit bulls. They are a weapon in certain situations. Sort of a gun on the hip.

Posted by: someguy at September 25, 2009 4:23 PM

yeah, my pitbull is used in liu of a gun :-/ get a clue, someguy.

Aren't we talking about dog poop? There's always someone to pull the breed card! If you catch her on camera, then you have proof. Then confront her or call 311. There are plenty of good suggestions here. I think calling animal control about her(as you said, "well trained") dogs off the leash is a bit excessive and vindictive, especially since the dogs are not the problem - it's their poop and their lazy owner. If by some chance her dogs get taken away and you can sleep at night and live with yourself because of it, then call animal control...

Posted by: Misty B at September 25, 2009 4:56 PM

Oh, and thanks for your last comment rob - I couldn't have said it better myself!!!

Posted by: Misty B at September 25, 2009 5:01 PM

@misty - agree with you. too harsh to call animal control. cameras are rolling though! :)

Posted by: guikazoid at September 26, 2009 10:35 PM

"HA HA! Its true!! I swear an Akita actually shits out MORE than it eats. "

That explains so much about our dog (he's from the shelter, but everyone thinks he looks like an akita mix). I never met a dog who pooped so much.
